theory behind how the channels work?

Recommended Posts

greetings!  i must say i do like the way things are going, but i have a few questions concerning approach with channels.  Its particularly confusing to have what appears are two sets of color channels.  "composite" and then the "layer name" ones.   Is there a tutorial or something that might make this a bit more clear (as the second set of apparent channels are not addressed in the help menu).  My particular concern is the proper practice in cutting out images and "keying" for video work

thanks!

In the recent RC1 build you will find two topics in the Help which cover channels - Channels Panel and Using channels. (These can be accessed by using the search term 'channels' from the Help menu.)

The former gives an overview of the panel and describes what you see there. The latter gives details on how you can use channels (and the Channels panel) to assist with image adjustment and composition.

The Composite channels represent the entire image in its current form and construction, while the second set of channels will change depending on what is selected on the page or in the Layers panel.

If there are particular areas within these topics which need clarifying, please let us know so we can improve them for the future.

Many thanks.

i guess what is confusing (other than it doesn't reference "pixel red, pixel green" etc.  is the purpose of the "extra" channels. (those listed under the composite channels)   They do not seem to be selectable, which also seems to be the case with spare channels.  When you make a "spare channel" it also seems to not be selectable (with the only hint as to what can be done being a trash can).

I think it would help the confusion a bit if the channel selected was highlighted.  On a weird side note, a spare channel won't select/highlight...unless you switch programs, then it's highlighted.   kinda strange.  While I'm thinking about it, It would also be greatly appreciated if when you select something, say "feather" with a keyboard shortcut, that the number field be automatically highlighted :-)   Would help limit the time wasted from mousing around.  "Good Design" is getting the most work for the least amount of effort :-)

Thanks for the feedback. If the Help was showing an older version, it might be a caching issue.

also, when right clicking on a "spare channel" and telling it to do something silly like "load to pixel red" will kill the program dead.   every time :-)

This is a concern. If you have not done so already, please could you raise a report in the Bugs section with a recipe for recreation so that the devs can look into this?

Thanks.
