Embedded document still linked

Steps: (see attached files)

  1. Create new Designer document: draft.afdesign
  2. Add a circle and save the document.
  3. Create new Publisher document: draft.afpub
  4. Place the Designer document.
  5. Double click on the placed document. Now it can be edited inside of Publisher as an embedded document. Add a square.
  6. Save the Publisher document and close it.
  7. Move draft.afdesign to another location on disk.
  8. Reopen draft.afpub. Now there is information that the resource draft.afdesign cannot be found. Relocate it.
  9. Result: The square is lost.

Expected: When double clicking the imported Designer document and editing it, the linked resource should be replaced by an embedded resource.

Workaround: When asked to replace the linked resource, don't do that. It's also inlined.

draft.afpub

draft.afdesign

Yes, that is the way that linking a document (PDF, .afdesign, .afphoto, .afpub, .svg, ...) vs an image (JPG, PNG, TIFF) currently works.

By the way, if linked documents were changed to work the same way as linked images, when you make a change (step 5) it would update the original. It would not convert it to an embedded document with the local changes.

It would be good to have a choice, for both linked images and documents, that lets the user determine (when the save is done) whether the original is updated, or whether the changes remain local, and whether the linked file becomes embedded.
