.afdesigner file I made a week ago won't open

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any ideas why a file named 'Lion doodle.afdesign' that I made in Affinity Designer last week suddenly won't open?  I get the error message "The file version is not supported by this version of Affinity."

I'm not having trouble with any other files I'm working on, only this one.

Thanks in advance for advice.

@ClareFree

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums

If it only affects one file why haven't you provided us with the file (or steps to reproduce the issue)?

@ClareFree

I am sure @Sean P can look into this, but can you please tell me why you are using 1.6.0 and not a more recent build? Also what version of Photo do you have that can open this file? Also what operating system are you using please?

Hi @ClareFree

It looks like you might have opened and saved the Lion doodle.afdesign in Photo 1.7.2 at some point which means it will no longer be accessible in earlier versions of Designer.

You would need to upgrade to Designer 1.7.2 (or 1.7.1 if still available) to regain access to that particular document in Designer

It would be best to export any custom brushes, assets, etc before upgrading as bad things can and do happen

@ClareFree

I suspect your firewall is blocking just Affinity Designer from seeing the internet and so knowing there is an update.

Instructions for updating your Affinity Designer for Windows (from the Affinity store) are at the bottom of the 1.7.2 update announcement

Quote

UPDATING TO THIS VERSION (free for existing customers)

The software version can be seen on the splash screen and the About dialog (in Help > About Affinity Designer).

If you’ve purchased from the Affinity Store— each time you start the Affinity Store software it will check for updates and offer any available update. The latest update will install over the top of any earlier version, with no need to uninstall. You can download the latest installer by logging into the affinity store here and find the order in your account and use the "Download" button in there. Alternatively, this new release (and previous versions of Affinity Designer for Windows) can be downloaded from this link (that installer is NOT for Windows Store purchases and needs a product key).

This is very good advice from Carl123

So would not the appropriate link be to the Affinity Designer for macOS - 1.7.2 page?

Yes, it would seem so, but Photo on Mac has not been bought directly from the Affinity Store using the email address associated with the forum account, so my firewall blocking theory would be rubbish (MAS purchases are surely whitelisted) and being stuck on 1.6.0 is most likely a MAS Apple ID account issue that means the update is not being seen.
