Can't seem to add stroke to an artboard in Designer

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm using Affinity Designer for Mac. I have the latest version: 1.7.1.

I'm trying to add a stroke to an artboard and it doesn't seem to be working. Adding a fill works just fine.

I keep increasing the width of the stroke settings, but no stroke is appearing at all. I must be doing something wrong, but I'm not sure what. I've attached a screenshot.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Actually, I was just wanting to add a stroke so I could see the boundaries of the artboard when it's not selected. But, after posting the above message, I realized I can change preferences for "Artboard Background Gray Level" and that lets me see the artboard's boundaries.

While it is debatable if artboard should have fill and stroke, when UI allows adding a stroke it should show too. This seems a bug.

I agree. There are old bug reports about this, by the way, but it wouldn't hurt to add a new one.

For now, you can use the Appearances panel to add a second stroke, which will be visible.

Hi skylamar :)

This is a bug logged with our development team, unfortunately there hasn't yet been any update on the report as to whether the help file is incorrect and this shouldn't be possible, or whether the application is bugged and the stroke should be there, but isn't being rendered. I've bumped the log directly to the project lead for a response, so hopefully I will have an update shorty here.

Agreed, I've also raised the context toolbar options, as these need addressing if it isn't supposed to be possible.

Please Note: I am now out of the office until Tuesday 2nd April on annual leave.

If you require urgent assistance, please create a new thread and a member of our team will be sure to assist asap.

Many thanks :)

As well as the Appearance Panel, of course :)

FWIW, I mentioned using the Appearance panel to add a stroke to an artboard in this post in another topic. The trick is to add more than one stroke to the artboard in the Appearance panel. There must be at least 2 strokes for any stroke to appear, but one can be 0 width & no color (or just hidden) if you only need one to show.

EDIT: Just for giggles, I created this:

Take a guess, then download Guess.afdesign to see if you were right. :3_grin:

 Any progress on this?

Hi Nikos!

I can confirm that the Helpfile has been updated to match the expected behaviour (that artboards should not support a stroke property) however unfortunately there has been no update on the development bug report.

I'll bump this with our developers now, many thanks :)

Does this mean that files created using the Appearance panel to stack multiple stokes on artboards like my Guess.afdesign one above won't work if the bug is fixed?

Personally, I think being able to add strokes to artboards is useful. As I see it the only bug is that there has to be more than one stroke applied for any stroke to be visible.
