Exporting a large PNG size query

Recommended Posts

Hello

I am using Affinity Designer on Windows 10 & have an artboard with various big images on it to use on a show stand.

I have tried to export the largest image 4800mm x 2800mm (56694px x 33072px) as a png but when i do it says ...

"Warning the PNG format supports images with a maximum dimension of 32767 px, Your output will be scaled to fit"

I want to export the image full size  ...Is this an Affinity thing or a png thing? & do i have any other options?

Cheers

Pete

Neither, apparently. It’s a limitation imposed by GDI in Windows, as discussed here.

The best solution is to reduce the DPI/PPI export setting. No one is going to view an image of that size (nearly 5 by 3 metres) from less than a couple of metres away, so 300 DPI is overkill: 150 DPI should be more than adequate.

Can you also explain why the transparency is not working
I have attached the image & the white are should be transparent

The green & blue is a bar of colour across the top & everything on the right hand side finishes halfway across so the whole of the left hand white section should be transparent!
I am new to Affinity & working on artboards which i have never done that before.

I need to send a tranparent image to a customer today  ...Can you help please?

I’m afraid I’ve no idea: I’ll have to leave that one to the Mac experts! The bottom line, however, is that you only need 300 DPI for coffee-table books.

Just for giggles, I visited Is This Retina? to find out the minimum viewing distance if you reduce the number of horizontal and vertical pixels to a third of what they are now (i.e. 100 PPI instead of 300 PPI). It told me that your image becomes ‘retina’ at or over 34 inches (86cm).

Are you exporting as JPEG? The JPEG format doesn’t support transparency, so you would have to use PNG or TIFF instead.

I'm exporting as a PNG ...hence my first question!

That’s what I thought, Pete, but it seemed like a good idea to check that you weren’t referring to a different image! How did you apply the transparency? Perhaps posting a screenshot of your export settings will help someone to work out what’s going on.

Just found the "transparent background button" in Document Set up & that solves my problem  ...sorry i hadn't seen that before! :$

Thanks very much for your help but again can you explain please ...

I have a 4800mm x 2800mm image in Designer & want to export it full size as a PNG (with transparency) to send to our customer.

When i click the export button all i get is a pixel size option & if i make that smaller then my image gets smaller.
How can i send a 4800mm x 2800mm image with less pixels?

In the Resize dialog there’s a ‘DPI’ control. Change the output resolution there before you export.

I’m afraid I’m a bit hampered here because I’m on my iPad at the moment! I think the ‘Resize’ option is on the Document menu.

There is no Document menu to look at!

The Affinity help is as friendly as Alfred in case of questions about the UI, as menus, sub menu entries, panels.
Different to Alfred it even opens on your screen the wanted menu for you + highlights it + shows a slowly animated arrow. (at least on mac)

I never noticed any such limitation caused by macOS. Whereas there is one as far I remember in PSD and Acrobat. By the way, just curios, I wonder why you export that file as PNG and not as PDF instead?
