Edit photos and apply results to video files.

Hi,
I am in the process of scouting places for video productions, taking photos and edit ending in TIFF files. The project asks for a type of editing, like old Kodak photographic films from past decades. I love the results I am achieving on this scouting photos. It is the perfect reference for the cinematography of this project. Is there a way to turn this "Film" editings into presets or LUTs or other way and apply them to the video footage?

Hi AT.HA,

Are these LUTs you've already downloaded from somewhere or do you want to create a LUT from the editing you've done in Affinity?

Affinity Photo does allow you to export a LUT file in the following formats: .3dl, .csp, .cube, and .look.  As long as your video editing app supports one of those formats, this should work fine :)

Hi Stokerg,

As a starting point I use another program (DXO Film Pack) that many here should know about and which includes digital versions of old photographic films and apply them to the RAW file handling. Then I export them to TIFF or Jpeg as needed. This program does not allow me to export in LUT formats. If you tell me Aff. Photo does it, that's great news, and I've never noticed it. Two questions:


1. Should I use TIFF (Adobe RGB) files to export the LUT file, even if they are later applied to video (sRGB)? I know there are bigger colour spaces for video, but for the web at least... it is sRGB. I will probably deliver my projects to TV broadcast; so TIFF should be the best choice to preserve information?


2. Can I really generate a LUT from the colour register that I tuned and is present in the TIFF file and then import it into a NLE (LUT format) program and simply apply it to my video footage (in my case Canon C-Log)? Seems too easy; sorry ,-)

Has anyone ever done a tutorial with this complete process? From Aff. Photo to the final video?

Okay you left the bit about DXO Filmpack out of your first message.

Sadly when you export out to TIFF or JPEG the LUT is baked into that file and you won't be able to extract that from the file in Affinity Photo.  Affinity allows you to export Adjustments you've applied, like Curves Adjustment ect to a LUT file.  

I can't see another way of doing this, unless you replicate what the LUT is doing in DxO in Affinity Photo. 

Someone else may know of a method

If you outsource the colour editing to a colourist, they should be able to get the look you're after.

Broadcast gamut is similar to srgb but the black and white levels are different.

Also, creating LUT from Affinity Photo is not necessarily going to get you a simple "apply a lut and call it a day" editing for video.

Also are you shooting the video in 8/10/12/14/16 bit?

Ideally, do what you're doing now to get reference shots, export it as srgb TIFF (8 or 16 bit that is closest to the bits you're shooting the video in) and colour match it in post when you've shot the video in your NLE/Colour grading software.

Luts are great for a reference point but it's still more ideal to build your own. If you've built the look in Affinity using adjustment layers, it should be relatively quick to translate the edits in the Colour Grading software.

Sorry If I forgot to mention DXO Filmpack.

To replicate the work in Aff. Photo is maybe impossible. Maybe quite close but not 100% I guess. And it's doing the same job twice.

At this time and at this stage of the project it is not possible to outsource a colourist. At later stages, at another stage of the available budget, it will be possible. For now I will have to resolve this more modestly. The project will be 4K up to 410 Mbps/10 bits.
