When I first installed the Affinity Publisher app, the "Column"  icon appeared in the toolbar. But now if I open the files I am working on the Column icon do not appear anymore

How do I recover and make the Column icon back on the toolbar?

I gues you´re talking about the Mac version, if so; make right-click on the toolbar to get access to the Customize Toolbar.. feature (macOS wide available)  and edit accordingly.

I don't recall ever seeing a Column icon on the Toolbar.

There is a Column box on the Context Toolbar when the Frame Text Tool is selected, though, if your window is wide enough. And it's in the overflow extension if your window is too narrow.

It was in 1.6 and appears at least in the official video tutorials:

Sorry, but I did not see it in that tutorial. Do you have a timecode where it's visible? And/or a hint about what it looks like?

Haha - good one. I was mislead by "first installed..." But the same procedure on Mac applies. Didn´t explain why his toolbar changes though.

He has Align Left Edges in the toolbar:

Thanks. So it's just terminology, since the OP asked about a Column icon, not about an Alignment icon. Columns are part of Text Frames, or grids, in Publisher.

@kepalakantor

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums :)

can you please provide a video of the he steps, creating a text frame. Please check that the context toolbar is still showing in the view menu.

Thanks for your response, Patrick Connor.

I am a total newbie; hence do not understand what you actually wanted.

That is the context toolbar for the Artistic text tool. Are you sure you have a Text Frame selected (look in the layers studio or which tool on the left is active)?

Sorry that is the right context toolbar for Frame text (I missed the icon on the left),  so that was not the problem.

Columns icon only appears once you have placed the frame test or selected an existing text frame. Columns does not appear with the tool chosen, but before the frame is placed on the page. That is what your screenshot looks like to me.

Open your document and click on any text frame, does Columns appear then?

Hi @effekt,

Welcome to the Affinity Forums :)

Sorry to hear you're having trouble! Can you please provide a screenshot of the Affinity app, with the text frame selected?

Many thanks in advance!

Thank you for having a look.

Columns are part of the Text Frame panel in Affinity Publisher not Affinity Designer.
