AlanPickup Posted July 28, 2019 Posted July 28, 2019 Following on from the problem with ligatures in Arial font I have now found that an images as not appeared in export PDF Web option. This is the first instance of using Publisher with a production Newsletter and I have to seriously consider that it is not stable enough. I have sent this out twice now only for errors to be spotted and having to withdraw the circulation list and resend amended each time when I have consulted the forum and found answers to the problem. The image in question, there may be more as I have not checked all of the the newsletter yet, is in the screen shots below. Also if I click on the tool bar box that says K Only the program crashes in both publisher mode and edit in photo. I realize these may be error on my part but I used PagePlus for 2 years producing the newsletter without any issues. It is only all the work of retyping or cutting and pasting that is stopping me abandoning this newsletter in Publisher and going back to PagePlus Jowday 1 Quote Alan Pickup Windows 11 Home all Affinity suite of Apps PC and Gigabyte Laptop 16gb Ram and Nvidia GTX1660 Super on each.
Staff Pauls Posted July 29, 2019 Staff Posted July 29, 2019 Can you upload the document and some of the problematic images to this private location Quote
AlanPickup Posted July 29, 2019 Author Posted July 29, 2019 Sorry had to find a work round as it was a 20 page newsletter required this morning. Deleted the images and reloaded them in to the document and it exported OK. Also the program does not crash if I click on the k box with the replace images. The ligatures are the biggest problem, only appearing as a single character in the pdf, yet is you select the text in the pdf and paste it the 2 joined character show. These are not easily to spot in a big newsletter. If you can recommend a sans serif body fount that does not have ligatures would be grateful as I cannot seem to change the default to none universally. I also think a lot of the ligatures are coming from text that has been copied and pasted across.from emails and word docs Will try and attach afpub and pdf if it happens again Quote Alan Pickup Windows 11 Home all Affinity suite of Apps PC and Gigabyte Laptop 16gb Ram and Nvidia GTX1660 Super on each.
Staff Pauls Posted July 29, 2019 Staff Posted July 29, 2019 Could you upload a PDF you are copying from and highlight some problematic text. It's not always possible to reverse engineer ligatures from PDF's but I'll have a look at what's going on Quote
AlanPickup Posted July 30, 2019 Author Posted July 30, 2019 Hi I created a sample page in page plusx9 using filler text set in Arial 12 I then added somewhere words that pick up ligatures at the end of the first paragraph and published this as a pdf. Imported it to Publisher not problems, then exported in as a pdf for web viewing and ligatures not showing one of the letters. Files and screen shots attached hope this helps as I have a lot of page plus files that pages are needed in publisher with or without date alterations / updates Export from Publisher.pdf PagePlusX9 pdf.pdf Publication1.ppp Publisher with Imported text.afpub Quote Alan Pickup Windows 11 Home all Affinity suite of Apps PC and Gigabyte Laptop 16gb Ram and Nvidia GTX1660 Super on each.
Joachim_L Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Perhaps it is just me, but I get only correct documents, even with the exported PDF from Publisher. ??? AlanPickup Posted July 30, 2019 Author Posted July 30, 2019 Following on from Joachims post I opened the publisher pdf in adobe reader and the ligatures are there. I use Google Chrome as my default reader and the ligatures do not show in google with the publisher export but the PPX9 pdf does. The person who first highlighted the problem uses apple safari as his reader and that does not show them. Now if you export the pdf from publisher as for print pdf version the ligatures show in chrome. Hope this narrows down the problem as most of my work is for viewing on the device so the files needs to be compressed so that gets through the email system or easy to download Quote Alan Pickup Windows 11 Home all Affinity suite of Apps PC and Gigabyte Laptop 16gb Ram and Nvidia GTX1660 Super on each.
AlanPickup Posted July 30, 2019 Author Posted July 30, 2019 Also a publisher pdf created direct in publisher without any importing or pasting does the same using thing web export pdf setting ligatures do not show in chrome, but do in adobe reader Quote Alan Pickup Windows 11 Home all Affinity suite of Apps PC and Gigabyte Laptop 16gb Ram and Nvidia GTX1660 Super on each.
Staff Pauls Posted August 1, 2019 Staff Posted August 1, 2019 you can also try 'embed all font's or 'Convert to curves' when exporting the PDF. Quote
AlanPickup Posted August 2, 2019 Author Posted August 2, 2019 This problem with the suggestions is the way we work with this newsletter, it can be a work in progress over a period of 3 months so i can be re-visiting it almost daily over this period as articles appear, never had any problems in Page Plus, which did use ligatures as shown in the pdf export. I have been down the route of setting text styles without ligatures but could not find how to make this my default style and remembering each time was a "B... Ache". Perhaps if the mods can give me definitive instructions how to make the no ligatures my default style that would be great as my previous efforts worked until I did a new text box and changing the style did not seem to work. Looked at the other suggestion from Pauls exporting text as curves increases the file size from 1mb to 8.66mb, embeding all fonts increases the size to 1.56mb so will go down that route and hope any mailbox restrictions do not apply when it is circulated. We tried sending a link to download the pdf from the website, but the downloads recorded and response to questions was low compared to the response of the email version when we asked questions in the articles for events etc. Quote Alan Pickup Windows 11 Home all Affinity suite of Apps PC and Gigabyte Laptop 16gb Ram and Nvidia GTX1660 Super on each.
Joachim_L Posted August 2, 2019 Posted August 2, 2019 What is the version of your Arial? Mine is 7.00 and gives no problems with ligatures. I think it came with Windows 10. AlanPickup Posted August 2, 2019 Author Posted August 2, 2019 yes it is the same version, are you exporting the pdf with the web profile and viwing in chrome? This is what does not work, other profiles are fine, as is PagePlus with the same seetting Quote Alan Pickup Windows 11 Home all Affinity suite of Apps PC and Gigabyte Laptop 16gb Ram and Nvidia GTX1660 Super on each.
