I've got a canvas with more than one object. I'd like to select two of them.

If I select the Move Tool and click and drag on the canvas over any number of objects, none are selected.

If I select an object and then do shift+click on another object, the second object is selected and the first object is deselected.
If I select an object and then do command+click on Another object, the second object is selected and the first object is deselected.

What should I try next?

If you want the Move Tool drag to select objects without having to fully enclose them in the selection marquee, in Preference > Tools. tick "Select objects when intersects with selection marquee."

The first object should not be deselected. Make sure "Transform object separately" on the context toolbar is not enabled if you want the selection box to enclose all selected objects. Command-clicking on the canvas doesn't do anything to change the selection; however, command-clicking & dragging drags out a duplicate of the selected object(s).

On the Layers panel, selections work the same way as in Finder -- shift-click to add all the objects between the first selected one & the one you shift-click on; command-click to toggle the selection of individual objects.

The Selecting video tutorial demonstrates how this works.
