So I created a newsletter in Publisher, set to link placed files instead of embedding. Within the newsletter I place ads that I also created in Publisher, as separate Publisher files. So when I place the ads, the Resource Manager shows the ad as being linked, as is expected. However, when I edit the ad from within Publisher, it doesn't edit the linked file.

CURRENT BEHAVIOR
I double click the ad and a file opens in Publisher... but it isn't the linked file. It reads <Embedded>. Any edits done to this <Embedded> file are not reflected in the actual file that is linked.

EXPECTED/DESIRED BEHAVIOR
When I double click on a linked Publisher file, that it open the original Publisher file that it is linked to.

Currently, linked image files (PNG, JPG, TIF) and linked document files (.afphoto, .afdesign, .afpub, PDF, PSD, SVG, ...) act differently.

Linked image files work as you expected. Linked document files don't.

Linking has several functions:

  1. The ability to edit the image or document file in a new Publisher tab.
  2. Notification when the linked file is changed, with the possibility of automatically updating it.
  3. Reduced file size.

1 and 2 are implemented for linked document files, but for 1 the changes are saved to the original only for image files.

3 is not implemented for linked document files. In that regard, the files act as though they are embedded. But you have the ability to edit them, which you do not have for embedded image files.

I think there is more work to be done here :)
