tatami
With MacOS Catalina around the corner, I’m preparing to move from Photoshop CS5 to Affinity Photo, for which I bought a license some time ago. When I prepare a .png for my website, I’m finding that .pngs exported from AP are bigger than their equivalents from Photoshop (eg 366 KB vs 330 KB). Most of my work is in greyscale and I’ve configured AP’s png export options like this: Pixel format: Grayscale 8-bit Resampler: Bilinear Matte: None ICC profile: Generic Gray Profile Embed ICC Profile: unticked Palettised: unticked Embed metadata: unticked Why are AP’s file sizes larger than Photoshop’s, and is there a way of configuring AP to export smaller .pngs? I'd really appreciate some help with this. Thanks in advance.
Staff Dan C Posted July 20, 2019 Staff Share Posted July 20, 2019 Hi tatami I believe this is due to the compression that PS applies to PNG export, unfortunately we don't yet have comparable export settings so you may find your PNGs are slightly smaller from PS. Your export settings in AP have been set to produce the smallest file possible, we hope to implement compression options at export in a future version but have no ETA for this feature currently, my apologies. tatami
Thank you, Dan C. It's reassuring to know I'm not missing anything. Fingers crossed that compression options are implemented sooner rather than later in AP. Dan C
R C-R
@tatami, since you use a Mac you might want to consider ImageOptim, a free app for compressing JPG, PNG, & GIF files. It is very easy to use, supports drag & drop (including onto its Dock icon), & can be added as a service, meaning you can right-click on a file & access it from the Services submenu. I use it for almost every JPG & PNG file I attach to posts here.
