For some reason, the toolbar at the top of my Affinity design window has mostly gone grey. I try to click on customize toolbar, and then drag items to the toolbar. they appear to stick, but then when I close the "customize toolbar" window, they go right back to being grey and unusable. I cannot see another way to gain access to the tools, or reset the toolbar. Thanks in advance!

Is it possible you have Preference > User Interface > Monochromatic Iconography enabled?

That wouldn’t explain the “mostly” part of “mostly gone grey”. What the OP describes sounds like what I would expect to see if I have a blank workspace (i.e. no documents open).

Can you give us a screenshot illustrating the problem?

Yes, great idea, thank you for asking!

The first screenshot demonstrates what the toolbar looks like when I have work open on the dashboard. As you can see, View Mode, Insertion, Snapping are available to be used, but other features are not. The second screenshot demonstrates what happens when I open "Customize Toolbar" – I am able to drag the individual elements I want onto the toolbar (although I am NOT able to drag the "default set" to the toolbar). Once I drag an item I want, I see it lit up in color. I can also drag away the elements that are greyed out if I wish, and they disappear with a little poof. The third screenshot demonstrates what happens as soon as I close the "customize toolbar" screen – the elements I just added are also greyed out and unusable.

Thank you again to everyone who is helping me to solve this mystery.

You have to make a selection for the tools to be active.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.1 | Affinity Photo 2.4.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Thank you – fiddling with that multiple times has brought online some but not all of the tools – see this screenshot – several of the geometry options are still greyed out.

The Geometry commands which are greyed out are all ones which require two or more objects/layers to be selected, but you’ve only selected one.
