Beta updates STILL failing

Recommended Posts

As reported many times when trying to update the beta it wipes out the current install and reports that the "update failed"

After a reboot it INSTALLS correctly (even though I had just started the computer and no other products had been started)

I am attaching logs as it is really time to get serious about fixing this issue that only happens with publisher

Thanks

As probably happened in the past, the error was:

Quote

+Error: The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: C:\Program Files\Affinity\Publisher Customer Beta.  The installation cannot continue.  Log on as administrator or contact your system administrator.

It seems odd that simply rebooting would resolve that.

I had read often that there are such Problems with the Installation on your System @Rick G
Are there the same Problems if you try an installation in an other drive, maybe "D"  or "E" where the UAC from Windows has no Access? I suspect threr is a Problem with the UAC. An other Suggestion is to set the Level from the UAC a Step down.
I also use WIN 10 64 Build 1903 and i had Problems with it with other software and my Softwareinstallations are all running on drive "D".

It's just a guess.....

Have a nice day.

I have never had that permissions problem, on either my desktop (installs to E:) or my laptop (installs to C:) running either Windows Home 1809 or 1903.

I did have a failure once that I did not investigate, when I tried to run the installer for an Affinity application that was already running. I wonder if that might manifest as a permission problem?

At this point I do not want to confuse the issue by installing on another drive. I updated all 3 products this morning and the only one to have an issue is Publisher. This SEEMS to point to an issue with the installer. The privileges error may be hiding a deeper issue. I have been posting this for months as have others and no one from Serif seems to be looking

After starting the computer this morning, I opened my mail program, launched the browser to get the update then tried to install it. Nothing else had been opened and the other 2 updates for Photo and Designer updated flawlessly .... and that was after the Publisher failure

It is interesting, though, that you seem to be the only user having this problem consistently.

Even if Serif is looking into it, without having your machine in hand they may have a hard time figuring it out.

Do you have Controlled Folder Access active? What antivirus and/or anti-malware programs do you run?

I don't think it's just Rick G who got this problem.

This happens to me too with all the beta apps (Designer, Photo and Publisher) everytime I'm updating them. First running the install and it reports "Setup failed" then rebooting and run the install again and it all works well. I've gotten used to it and expect this whenever I'm updating the Affinity betas but would'nt mind if it got fixed. :) Tell me if I can help in anyway.

Btw, I've had no problems installing or updating other apps but the Affinity betas.

Do your setup log files show the same error that Rick G has been reporting?

You can find them, after a failure, by pressing and holding the Windows key, then pressing R. In the Run box that appears, enter %temp%\AffinitySetup and you'll get a File Explorer window opened to the folder that contains them. The subfolder with the latest date corresponds to the most recent installation attempt.

There isn't anything unique about the Publisher installer vs Designer and Photo. When it failed to install, where you prompted to elevate to Administrator (via UAC)? When it fails, if you run the installer as an admin, does that fix it?

No prompts and no issues with the process until the end and then a message "Setup failed". I believe I did try running it as administrator unsuccessfully but I will do it again with the next beta as I don't really remember the details

So you were never prompted to elevate permissions during the installation? It would be really useful if we could see a video of your installation (from start to failure).

No UAC prompts at all. I will make a video later today or tomorrow

It makes me think of three things I'd check :

- Is some sub-folder in the publisher install path, or a disk unit in write protected mode ?

- ctrl shift esc to launch task manager (actually I also launch an alternative for extra functionality, depending on the case) , or task manager in the search or execute dialog in Windows Start.

Just to see, before installing publisher, and while you're installing, if there are many instances of Publisher, the installer or whatever.. This sometimes happens with other apps, and it would cause a conflict in install. Is not rare for some failure to have those duplicates in memory, at some point (not with Affinity, I mean in general, depending mostly on how stable is the system in certain matters).

- And almost impossible that it'd be the case : The free space is very very low in the HD.

And yeah, right click on the exe and run the install "as administrator" could at least remove a couple of options to think about.

Thanks Rick. When you hit the "Update" button (with the shield logo) you should be prompted to elevate to Administrator privileges. What kind of account are you using now? A machine admin account, or a basic account?

I work in an administrator account. It automatically gives me the raised privileges warning.

How have you enabled that? I use an administrator account too, but I'm still required to elevate permissions when necessary.

Which contradicts my previous statement. There is a uac warning but the modal window doesn't seem to appear on the screen recording (?)
