I'm having problems with the select tool on affinity photo

Hi,

Recently moved from an ancient version of Photoshop. 

I'll select stuff then try to move the part of the image I've selected, the whole image moves. I'm on the right layer, I'm clicking on the selected part. 

Also...

I'll select a part of an image, the invert the section, then press cut to delete the area around the selection, everything disappears.

 

I know i'm at fault, just cant see how to sort this  out, Please help !!

Hi @AdmiralSausage it sounds like your image layer needs to be a pixel layer, right click on the image and choose rasterise. It should now do what you want.
