Posting link to Apple Insider, https://appleinsider.com/articles/18/06/28/why-macos-mojave-requires-metal----and-deprecates-opengl

I see so many, maybe not a US ton, problems that suggest turning off Metal as the answer.  Is APh designed to work with Metal in all Mac’s that support Metal? Is this a problem with older Mac’s or random Mac’s, OS upgrades and APh.  Not a problem to date for me, just trying to understand, as Metal isn’t new, if above link is accurate.

Yes it is. In the Tutorials forum there is a tutorial demonstrating this.

I understand the process and previously watched the excellent video.  I guess my question should had asked, why is it possible to enable Metal if system is not capable to support, or provide notification, when enabled, APh may not work if enabled.

I don't know how Serif has implemented things but Metal support is not monolithic; it's actually varied and complicated.

Check out this Metal 3.0 (and yes, there are Metal 1 and 2 as well) feature chart; you don't have to know what the details mean. The complexity point is supported by the horizontal columns and the mix of supported/non-supported for the rows.

Thank you for that information.  APh is intellectually developed to advise me, when enabled, my iMac’s hardware.  I guess it will remain a hit and miss for some until they upgrade.  I did a Topic Search today: Metal.  Pages of questions and turn off, turn on.  Just saying...

@Cecil I guess my point ultimately is twofold: first, it's a complex topic to handle across time snd second, complexity leads to bugs for even the most diligent.

As far as a common refrain being to turn off metal support, I suspect that's as much a workaround as anything, though the lack of spelling that out can come across as it being "the solution". I always take it as a "let's see if this improves things and if so, we (Serif) will look into it further while the [bug | crash | misfeature] is better behaved in the meantime.

That is all we can request.  Thank you.

One last bit -- please note that when it comes to translating the "turn off metal" responses, these are my suppositions and assumptions based on interacting with Serif support for several months. I'm not part of Serif nor do I speak for them (not that they would want me to anyway ;-) )
