Automation, scripting, data marge, Linked Files

Recommended Posts

Hi

1.7 Is awesome, however I'm not seeing any of the things I was hoping for.....

In persuit of automation and faster workflows, when can we expect any of these in Affinity Photo:

1) Automation via script - Javascript/VBScript - or perhaps even an SDK (not macros, thats a totally different thing)

2) Linked Files (almost like linked smart objects, or linked XREFs if you will). We often need to update 20 to 30 layers from rendered 3D packages, doing this manually is a major hassle. We just want to press a button and have all layers update from external sources

3) Data Merge / Data Sets. We work on various templates and need to run data sets via csv/txt file to update text layers and some layers from external sources

From that list, I think possibly number 3 can be done with Affinity Publisher, is that correct?

Any comments are greatly appreciated!

Yes, which is why I asked "when.....?"

You will not get an answer to that.

However, for linked files: You can use Affinity Publisher to get them right now.

Publisher supports linked files, and will Place them as layers. It also has the Photo Persona (if you also own the Affinity Photo application) which will allow you to do much of your photo editing within Publisher. And you can either have the images updated automatically if they're changed, or you can use the Resource Manager to update them automatically.

Files saved by all 3 Affinity applications are compatible and have the same file structure, so you could even open them in Photo later if you wanted (but you won't have the "update on demand" function, nor the automatic update preference). I would recommend just staying in Publisher unless you need one of the Photo functions that it doesn't include. But if you need one of them, you can use the menu command Edit in Photo to easily switch to the full Photo application. (Easily switching back is not yet possible in Photo 1.7.1, but is coming in 1.7.2.)
