I always have had export issues with Designer, specifically when it comes to pixel alignment. It wasn't a bottleneck until now, as I tried to make an animation by making the frames in Designer. Here is exactly what I did:

1. I made a 500x500 canvas and made the design on there, a figurine.
2. I selected the canvas in the layer panel, copy paste, renamed (so I have my second frame)
3. On the figurine, I rotated the eye-balls, that's it, nothing else.
4. Repeated steps 1-3 til I had 10 frames.
5. I exported the 10 frames.
6. Imported the 10 images as an image sequence in Moho, did not move anything else, and exported as a GIF.
7. Result:

crunchtime.gif?w=770

As you can see, it shifts position from frame to frame, which means the exported single images already have a shift, which then means that the copy paste of canvas has errors. Because my logic says that when you copy paste, it's a perfect 100% clone, which in Designer is clearly not. Like I mentioned, I had this problem from day 1, but I didn't needed a pixel perfect workflow til now.

Anyone has advice on how to solve this? Because this is obviously unreliable which requires me to go back to Illustrator for exporting image sequences, which also means I can't use Designer to design my frames.

Thanks.

Hi ambiroa,

Make sure everything is using whole pixels, if you check each frame by selecting everything and then checking the Transform Panel and i suspect some of the X and Y placements will be off by a few pixels and will explain for the jump.

If not, please attach the .afdesign file and i'll look into this.

It helps to set Preferences > User Interface > decimal places for pixels to a number greater than zero -- otherwise, everything in the Transform panel will be rounded to the nearest integer value even when the actual value is not.

I recommend 2 or 3, minimum. I've seen rounding down happen to .0 with only 1 decimal place.

@stokerg oke thanks, will check the specs on each of my canvasses/frames

@R C-R @walt.farrell ok thanks, I honestly didn't know about this setting at all; just to fully understand what a setting of "3" does:

- moving the selected item from X:1 to X:4, because it's 1+3=4
- scaling the selected item from 300w to 303w, because it's 300+3=303

Just two examples so I can tell the setting is working properly?

Given a setting of

  • 0, you might see that the reported X position of your Artboard is 25px. That really means that it's somewhere between 25.0 and 25.4999... because the display is rounded down to the specified number of decimal places.
  • 1, you might see that it is 25.0, or 25.1, or 25.5, etc. (But 25.0 could be anything between 25.0 and 25.49999..., for example, rounded down.)
  • 2, you might see that it is 25.00, 25.03, 25.05, etc. (But 25.00 could be anything between 25.000 and 25.004999..., for example, rounded down.)
  • 3, you might see that it is 25.000, 25.005, etc. (25.000 could still be anything between 25.000 and 25.0004999..., for example, rounded down.)

I generally feel that at 3 decimal places it's reasonably safe to assume that a displayed value of 25.000 really is the integer 25, and it's integer values that you need.

Yes, integer values are possible -- for example,  just enter them as you would any other number in a numeric field. So if you want 25, you can just type 25 without adding a decimal value, or type 25.0. Both work equally well.

Maybe a stupid question, but are 100% integer values possible in Designer?

Yes but also No. If you resize a 121 pixel width to 110% you will get fractional dimensions, nature of math and geometry.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.0 | Affinity Photo 2.4.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.0 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.
