AP Refining selections - preview better than the final result?

So I am trying to replace the green background from a photo with a simple light grey background. Here is a detail from the original photo:

I use the Selection Brush Tool and then refine the selection to get rid of the green color while selecting the hair. The preview looks pretty good (over the new background I added):

I then output as a mask and I get this:

03.jpg.6346271b5b36176b27b63e32134275e0.jpg

As you can see the green is still showing in the hair area. Why isn't the end result as good as the preview?

I get similar results, but I seem to get a better result when I Output as a New layer.

Can't really explain why the Mask output option is not as good as the preview

 

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI.
