Field panel in Publisher dont insert fields in text frame by doubleclick

Recommended Posts

Got Problems with the field panel:
I'm just delving deeper into the world of Publisher (V  1.7.1.404) - absolut exiting! I have just watched the video tutorial "Page layout". Unfortunately, I am not able to insert even a single field into a text frame via the field panel by double-clicking, as explained in the video as well as in the online help.
The cursor is placed in the text frame (master document) the style palette "Fields" is open, but e.g. the fields "Name" or "Page number" are not clickable with the mouse.
When I use the Text/Insert/PageCount commands it works but no hashtag is displayed in the master document, but " Nr.". Curly braces are not shown either. I work with a German version on Win 7.
In the screenshot you can clearly see that also the instruction appears grey in the palette.
What can I have overlooked?
Thanks for help

Just to make sure you understand about clicking in the Fields panel: You double click on the word Name or the word Page Number, not on the field value. Don't worry that they don't seem clickable. Just double-click on them, and the field value should be inserted.

If you try to insert the Page Number that way in a Text Frame on a Master Page you should get a #, but on a document page you should get the actual page number.

I don't know if there might be some bugs related to your use of German vs my use of English, of course. But the Text > Insert > Page Number works for me.

Your PNG attachment does not work for me, by the way.

I've just tried to insert a Field for the first time. I assume it was working for you, Walt, last year?

Neither View>Studio>Field> double click nor Text>Insert>.. are working.

I'm using Publisher 1.8.3.641

Both approaches are still working, Ralph.

Note that for double-clicking in the Fields panel you double-click on the field name, not the field value.

Especially for the Text > Insert ... approach what are you trying to insert, and have you made sure your text cursor is properly set in a text frame?

Hi Walt,

Nope - not for me!

With the Text>Insert approach, I have (in the time since posting) discovered that everything works except the <more> option. This loads the Fields panel - which doesn't work. So I can insert page numbers, dates etc. but not File names or Paths.

The View>Studio approach loads the Frames panel - where nothing works!

The world won't end, but it would be nice to know if others are having the same trouble. The fact that there have been no replies to your post of June 19 suggests I might have a special feature😬
