Too many bugs?

Wonna say one thing, I already been saying longer while ago:

Using Affinity Designer since the start, I not been happy with bugs, and the way (not really) these are handled after report. New updates been comin, with more new features (not sure if some of these features been so important new deals) but bugs remained. Now we got 1.7 .... the new Publisher, and new bugs, here with Designer.

My question: Are we beta testers for software, we paid for? 

I want to work with the apps I been buying, I want to be sure, the apps work fine. I do not want to spend my time writing bug reports, 

test all possible settings on my mac, .....  no!

I really like the apps, but I would prefer more stable apps when new updates show up, all problems solved, ..... and then when all done may be new features. 

How long did it take to give us arrows in Designer? .....   funny? ....  nada ... this is not funny, this is just one thing: Poor!

Version 1.6 Designer had bugs until 1.7 .... now with new bugs.

Bugs Bunny Designer .... this is funny!

Serif does recognise that the current release build Affinity Designer 1.7.1 for macOS  needs some software fixes and we plan to start a beta cycle for version 1.7.2  this week. It will address reported problems without new features being added.

I know you’re frustrated, but please follow the Affinity Forum Guidelines and refrain from ‘shouting’.

Your experience is clearly an unusual one, or these forums would be littered with complaints about the inability to save work. If you provide details of your system specs and any error messages you encounter when trying to save, someone may be able to make helpful suggestions about addressing the issue.

In another similar post that you made, you refer to Designer crashing, but then you provide dumps of Publisher failing. It would help if you would be sure which software you're talking about and use the proper name, consistently, please.

I would not use words as pissed off, or others like this, but: I you want to use a software for professional work, for earning money, for making jobs, for every day flawless use, then I been disappointed plenty of times with Affinity Photo and Designer. I am using Designer from the early beginning, and yes ....... there been many many bugs over the years, some of them really frustrating and annoying. Bug fixing (this is my opinion) never been on priority list number one for Affinity products, as new features started to show up, but bugs remained. In such moments I been ....sed off, and this is also reason why I started this thread.

My idea: Fix any bugs that got reported, all of them, so no bugs are around anymore (will not happen, but most bugs fixed would be great) , ..... then you may work on new features. And bring these new features .......... without adding new bugs! Sometimes I ask myself: Who it testing this software, are they really "working" with it, or just playing around?

Yes, I love Designer, ..... Photo not so much (I find it pretty overloaded, and no option to reduce the options, so you have to search all the time, if you do not use every day) ...... but I hat the bugs!

I forgot: I the past I already spent plenty of time to report bugs, try settings, report ....... mail .............  but his is much more frustrating if you spend these times and the bug will not get fixed! So I will just forget about that, and live with ...king bugs ..... and may be in another years bug will get fixed. (there is one bug that really needed about 3 years or so to get fixed ..... this is fast ha ha ha ha .........  )

It's somewhat ironic that the last 2 out of 3 paragraphs in the Affinity Forum Guidelines would appear to condone shouting in certain circumstances.

 

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

I am not sure that this is an unusual experience. Since updating to the new 1.7... I have had nothing but trouble, and have barely been able to edit a photo. With the amount of crashes and slow spinning wheels, work that normally would take me 10 minutes, literally takes me all day!

I have the same feelings about all the situation. First make the app stable and by that I mean DO THE BASICS - fix all annoying bugs and do the most necessary features (e.g. simplify).
When you finish that, you can play around and do the fancy features...

Come on, there is still a bug with expanding that destroys your shape completely...

I am sorry to hear the Mac versions are so buggy. Just to calm Windows users down I have to mention that the Windows versions are (as were previous versions) pretty stable. I rarely see crashes. Can't remember one actually. I am currently pushing Designer 1.7 for Windows to the limit - backing up as crazy as I go - but no crashes.

Just for the overall picture. The suite as such doesn't seem to be flawed with bugs on both desktop platforms. Something related to OS X in the Mac versions seems to be the root cause.

My experience on Windows 10 Professional was and is rock solid for years and years. 

I hope the next release gets you back on track!

Now I am pi..ed off too! There is no trustworthy workaround for this bug, so I could work fast and stable as it been before this damned update ...... bringing us this bug! This is more than dilettantish what Affinity is doing here, even knowing about this bug and not fixing it! Bug bringers!

Which bug in particular? This topic is not about one bug in particular, but about Designer on Mac having a "lot of" bugs, from what I can see.

Feelings are not involved. A development team has a finite number of hours and a growing backlog with bugs and architecture and feature stories. They are all estimated and prioritized into the sprint/week/month.

So the priorities are what matters here; and mind you we are talking about business priorities! Fixing all bugs on the backlog would delay the next release as well as optimizations of the "technical platform" - the product core. Unless you hire additional developers and specialists (or hire people temporarily for just a project) with all that follows - good and bad.

Serifs software products are cheap. I think we are all paying another price for the model though; Serif (naturally) wants to move forward with (unfortunately) a few tiny development teams and thus they can only fix a portion of the bugs on the backlog in each release. So either we get features or several bugfixes. Or some features with some bugfixes. I don't know their ratio.

It is the result of the business strategy and a staffing strategy made by management in Serif. Be very aware of this. 

Once I was in a major product that had to wait forever for legal clearance of some major features in the backlog. We had to keep the developers busy so we simply asked them to fix almost every bug in the backlog and made what I called a service release. It was a bizarrely boring release where I had to arrange entertainment and teambuilding to keep the spirits high but boy did it make people (end users) happy for years. Our releases were quite big at the time (in man hours as well) so we fixed an incredible number of bugs in one go. The effect was bigger than I thought. Many thorns were removed from many peoples workflows and everyday work. After this we understood even better how much pain bugs causes. Even though we are in daily contact with our end users. Many users are just being nice. But their pain is real.

I'm constantly amazed by how excellent and dependable the Affinity suite is. Certainly I'm aware of certain bugs, which can be a pain, but these are complex apps and, in my experience, they do get addressed in updates. Not trying to push anyone's buttons or delegitimize anyone's frustrations. Just want to report that I'm incredibly happy that Serif exists. Literally my favorite apps ever.
