But when you want complex definition of shapes for icons ( for web pages and app design) believe, me this tool is invaluable and saves a LOT of time and planning ahead to create the results with the simple (but efficient) tool set we have.

Well I admit I am unfamiliar with those more complex examples since I never went through with them. I could be underestimating it. It is just my fear that too many tools might be added to a single persona. Right now, I think Affinity Photo is pretty overwhelming with the amount of tools in the first persona. If I'm not using my Ugee monitor, I can't see all the tools in my MacBook because they get cut off, even if the window is maximized.

Hi all,

I am new to AD and please have patience with me ... ;-)

I guess this post is not about CSS Shapes, right?

Is there a way in AD to create a non-rectangular, responsive CSS Shape I can export and use in a web page to let text float around or withing the shape?

So, some more visual way as to what is explained here https://sarasoueidan.com/blog/css-shapes/

Thanks a lot and kind regards, Igor

Hello, and welcome to the Affinity forum.

I don't know about a webpage, but you can have text flow in a shape. You need to convert the shape into a textbox. To do that, have the shape selected and go into Layer > Convert to Text Frame. From there on, you can continue to change the shape of the textbox with the Node Tool while text is in it.

I am not sure since I am unfamiliar with css shapes. If you move to the Export persona, you can create a slice in the Layers panel (not with the Slice Tool since you have a non-rectangular shape). Then in the Export Options tab, you can change the Preset, but I don't know whether or not the file type you are looking for exists in that list.

Lol I am out of web design since years and it is a joy to see that CSS can do custom text frames for text float now as well! Glorious!

Yes. At least if one is building more than the single example above.

Indeed, working with big vector pieces can mean mapping out tons of raw geometry, hitting select all, and then using the shape builder tool to merge, subtract, and trim at will without having to think about what is and isn't selected when working with standard boolean operations. It's actually a bigger deal than most people give it credit for and I'm quite surprised Affinity isn't jumping at the chance to put their own spin on something that lies at the heart of vector and object-based design: improving the user experience of working with shapes and operations.

I guess that the shape builder was available in adobe CS5 when I last used that version. I didn't need to use it. From you post, I infer that the shape builder only interacts with shapes that are overlapping, and ignores the rest? Is that correct?

If so, that is nice, but I can't manually make a good blend, or a mesh warp. I can manually select objects for booleans. As already mentioned,  blends, and mesh warp are features Serif should build first.

Hello and welcome to the forums.

It is inconvenient that there is not a definite time for the releases, but that is because there was trouble in the past in which different releases fell behind schedule due to the work put into it. Affinity doesn't set exact times any more because they don't want to disappoint users. Sorry.

Has there been any update on this feature yet. I have been using Designer now for two months and it is awesome. Our company specialise in drawing icons and illustrators shape builder saves a huge ammount of time when it come to creating complex geometery that is pixel perfect. We have found designers export tools and SVG optimisation is great for us and the grid tools are amazing. We still have to rely on illustrator for the majority of work a tthe moment , the shape builder tool would defonetely remove the need for us to use illustrator at all.

I never realized how much I need this tool before.... I wanted to create a Logo just the other day that included many shapes and I couldnt figure out a good way to get to the shape I wanted it to be. Seriously, this is the only drawback AD has compared to AI (at least for my uses). If Serif could integrate an equivalent to AI's Shapebuilder I'd be more than happy.

Hi benard72,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

No, sorry. We are focused on delivering what's listed on our Designer's roadmap first (it covers the whole 1.x cycle).

What about considering this for the future 2.x cycle? ;)

Best regards!

I think they want to solve some problems currently present within the Boolean operations before building something like a Shape Builder Tool.

Best regards!
