Windows 10 related question about Af Photo.  As a user of Photoshop for over 12 years the ability to make a mask and apply a black to white gradient on the mask is a 12 second job.  I just spent 20 minutes trying every which way to apply the same thing in af photo while I was also in photoshop.  The screen shot is of an image where the right side is slighlty coloured and the left side not I should add that the mask is on a HSL layer, though you can not see this now.   I found the gradient tool so unvbelievably comlex matter just to get a black to white box in the drop down menu so that I could apply it, when i did, it still went wrong, it did not work or it dissappeared into a white box and goodness knows what happened.  Please help.  I am trying to wean myself off photoshop, I expect there to be a learning curve but do not expect simple tasks to be made complex head aches.

Microsoft - Like entering your home and opening the stainless steel kitchen door, with a Popup: 'Do you really want to open this door'? Then looking for the dishwasher and finding it stored in the living room where you have to download a water supply from the app store, then you have to buy microsoft compliant soap, remove the carpet only to be told that it is glued to the floor.. Don't forget to make multiple copies of your front door key and post them to all who demand access to all the doors inside your home including the windows and outside shed.

Apple - Like entering your home and opening the oak framed Kitchen door and finding the dishwasher right in front you ready to be switched on, soap supplied, and water that comes through a water softener.  Ah the front door key is yours and it only needs to open the front door.

Hi,

I just click on the node of the gradient that is dragged across the image and then click on the colour i want from the colour wheel or click on the nodes in the colour swatch on the context toolbar and change settings from there, also make sure your adjustment is clipped to your image when you add a new mask layer:

Hallo Summersara, I notice your layers panel is different from mine in my screenshot.  So it does not work at all like photoshop? You have set the HSL adjustment layer BENEATH the image and the mask goes on top of that Adjustment layer, not beside it as in your screenshot.

Thankyou for the reply

Hi Chris,

Sorry, i couldn't see your layers panel very well on your screen shot, so just did my interpretation of what i thought you was trying to do.

The Adjustment layer in my screen shot is actually masked to the image, I just drag the adjustment down onto the image thumbnail until you see a small, blue highlight or to clip it, drop it down until you see the long, blue highlight. I just clicked on the arrow to open up the layer to see better the adjustment and mask.

It is not always easy to coax AP to do simple things but I tried and

  • added mask
  • applied gradient
  • set gradient colours to white and black.

Seemed to work as expected (for once!)
