Basic functions don't work

Recommended Posts

Can't scale an object proportionally.  Using the finger hold works only 5o% of the time if I'm lucky.  The padlock to lock it doesn't work at all.

Cant move the gradient nodes.  They just pick a color instead of moving unless I try to drag it really fast.  Works about 10% of the time.  Normally it just picks whatever color and I have to undo over and over and over.  Sometimes it just drags the node around for more undo fun.

Can't join two nodes even using that stupid finger hold because "Close" and "Join" don't work.  Works 0% of the time.  Using that stupid finger hold just gives random other functions and when i get the blue dot thing Close and Join don't work anyway.

For crying out loud could we please get these basic things working and some sort of alternative to this stupid finger hold thing.  It's pretty much unusable wasting time trying to get these basic functions to actually work.

Seems to lock this object ok. Can’t move or resize when locked.

Seems to be working here You can see it break a node, join a node and then break again and this time close the node to close gap.

Seems to work here. One finger hold results in proportional scaling.

In addition to what DM1 has posted, moving gradients is not an issue for me. It sounds as though your holding down to long before moving the gradient. If you enable 'Show Touches' you can see when a long press is trigged (by the touch marker shrinking).

Would you be able to do a screen recording with Show Touches enabled demonstrating the problems you are getting please?

Not talking about the layers lock.  I assumed the Padlock in the Transform dimensions would "lock" the scaling but doesn't do anything.  No, I don't want to use my "other hand" finger to scale because it's *gasp* holding my ipad.  I don't always have some place to drop it to do those stupid finger tricks - ya know, *mobile*....

Yes, I have "show touches" enabled - why is there just not a button or toggle or something?   Or is Designer supposed to be only used on an iPad flat on a desktop so you can use both hands to for this stuff?

I mean really - even the cheapest, most basic vector programs for the iPad make this simpler than Designer.  I don't need to drop my iPad so I can use both hands to simply scale an object, I don't need to watch how long I'm touching something to change a gradient, and I can simply select two nodes and pick "join nodes" for it to work - the first time.

Don't get me wrong - I think Designer is fantastic and I use the desktop version all the time.  But it's sad when I need to do basic stuff like this it's more efficient to do it in another program and export everything over to Designer.

Yes, I can do a screen recording tonight and post it.

Here's the scaling screen cap.  The blue dot switches off and on even though I've kept my thumb on the screen (cause I'm holding the iPad.)  The gradient is still a problem as it switches to color picker most of the time.  In the preferences I tried switching "Touch for gestures only" off and on but that doesn't seem to make any difference so I'm assuming it has nothing to do with hold fingers on screen stuff.

I'd pay you extra for a proportional scaling toggle and a way to disable the gradient switching to color picker lol.  Other than these issues I could ditch all my other vector programs for Designer.

Thanks

@wolfgangcat The lock refers to the operation of the adjustment wheels in the Transform studio. Separate action to transforming with pencil or finger.

I suspect it’s by Design this way.

disable the gradient switching to color picker

It’s basically a Fill tool that applies a gradient with colour, based on the selected objects fill colour, unless you choose a specific Gradient from the Swatches Gradient Presets. You can tap on the little circles to change colours or transparency, or tap on the line to add more colours etc.

I'm not seeing the colour picker?  Long pressing does show up with the magnifying loupe which supposedly aids positioning (which I personally find annoying). If that’s what you are referring too, I agree, it definitely needs a toggle to turn off ALL instances of loupe with all tools. :)

Okay - I see the problem with scaling lol.  I never would have guessed in a million years that you have to drag over the Transform panel with the lock on for proportional scaling.  Without your  video I never would have stumbled on this as it is not in the iPad Designer Help documentation.  Silly me dragging the object handles like every other vector program lol.

Yeah that color picker thing pops up way too fast so it's a constant source of frustration that kills the workflow.  If a toggle won't work then at least an option to set the timing way up might make it tolerable.

Designer is a wonderful, powerful program for the iPad but some of these unintuitive, weird ways of doing things has me spending more time looking up how to do simple things than getting any work done lol.

Thanks so much for the videos DM1 - you've just made my Designer experience a whole lot better!

For such a powerful application iPad Designer is still in early development stages and has just had a major update introducing many new features. I'm hopeful that with time the bugs will be eradicated and some more effort directed at fine tuning controls to make them more intuitive and easier to use.
