reading through your comments, it is clear IOS has limitations on basic areas such as no ability to say down load

https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5368-adobe-dng-converter.html

open raw files on dated cameras. (unless theirs an app ?)

Can we back up for a moment?

Although iOS — the iPad in particular — is waiting for upcoming improvements in connectivity with external drives, this isn't really a huge limitation because there are so many means to get data from storage devices and networks via the cloud. For example, your WD My Cloud drive has an app enabling you to share data to all of your devices, including your iPad.

Getting at this data is not the problem here. As @DM1 mentioned earlier in this thread the issue is this: "iPad version of AP only gets to use the Apple supplied RAW decoder, not Affinity's own version."

My guess is that the Fuji S5000 was simply overlooked by Apple either due to its age (camera announced in late 2003), or its lack of popularity compared with other models.

As I mentioned, unfortunately even after converting this file to DNG via the Adobe DNG Converter software I was still unable to open it in Affinity Photo for iPad. I was surprised by this as usually this straightens things out. Must be something odd about either this camera model or with the specific raw file you provided.

EDIT 01: Oops... just now seeing @kirkt's reply and his successful use of Adobe DNG Converter to convert the RAF to DNG. I'll give that a try to see if I can verify his findings.

EDIT 02: Confirmed. Adobe DNG successfully creates a DNG that can be used by Affinity Photo for iPad. But in my case, I was able to create a custom compatibility for DNG 1.4, while also checking the box for Linear (demosaiced). That last bit seems to be the key.

To be honest Rob,  I have never had any issues downloading files to my iPad. Apps like Readdle Documents or Files app (built in) can access all cloud storage, other pc's/Mac via networking. I use iCabMobile for video/utube downloads. In addition to that I can use my lightning/USB memory stick to directly transfer files between devices or set up a 5ghz local network on my WD Wireless Pro for fast wireless transfers. There is plenty of software for PC/Mac that allows direct connection between PC/Mac and iPad, and Apple sell cables to connect to SD cards. Plenty of cheap Chinese card readers too that work with iPad. Not really that 'limited'.

I did some testing as I have a WD MyCloud device connected to my home network, which I use to store some images. Using the My Cloud iOS app I can browse the RAW files, no thumbnail preview for the Nikon D300 RAW files as this is due to the My Cloud app not being able to load a preview. I can select and use the top right icon to select Open In, scroll to Copy to Photo and tap. The RAW file is imported into the Develop persona and can be adjusted, this all depends on the camera make and model being on our supported RAW list, this will no no affect on the preview within the My Cloud app.

Other questions I have are,

I have used a laptop to transfer some stock video to an SD card, these I brought in through wifi from WD my cloud. (56 gigs total)

(Laptop quicker around 25 megs, still slow with 5ghz router, where as iPad chugs along at 12 megs, no USB port on laptop or Ethernet port, as you can increase to a slightly quicker 80megs on a desktop)

issues are in the SD card I have files one say called “operation system fails”

i know the reason why the SD card cannot be read by the amazing usb 3 speeds (one way only) of the iPad Pro.

So question how do you dm get around this limitation stamp into iOS ?

Rob, check out this program (freebie from Easus ) called Mobimover. Connect your iPad to your pc/Mac via lightning to USB connector. Run mobimover select device, and select files to transfer. All via direct connection and super quick. It works with Apple phones and iPads.  If you direct connect your wd drive to the pc/Mac at same time you can select from that too.

https://www.easeus.com/phone-transfer/

Paid version is for commercial use and has tech support. Free version has same features, no tech support.

Hello DM I did install the program you suggested and then grabbed a file off the WD takes for ever see above, now the speed from laptop to iPad Pro by cable quick. Only problem I am having is where is the file ?

Any ideas ?

Their site says

Once the transferring process completes, you will see Transferring Completed Page. You can then go to the device to view files. To go back to the previous page, please click OK, I got it. (no not really )

Rob, I haven't used a pc nor nearly 6 months. The iPad does it all for me. I used mobimover to move my rather large music library (4gb) as iTunes was doing all sorts of strange things with my music.

Are you sure that your iPad is connected directly to the WD Wireless pro's own 5ghz network? You mention using a 5 ghz router? iPad to wd Wireless Pro doesn’t need a router as it has its own network server with a choice of 2.4 or 5ghz connection speeds.

I just tested downloading a 400mb file. It took less than 24 secs from start to finish. I screen recorded the transfer to get the figures. The downloaded file appeared in the Files, MyCloud folder where I just copied it to my Documents folder (that part was pretty much instantaneous.

You need to catch the Fast Train service!! :)

Rob the first shot shows view of wd Pro via Files app. Second shows the wd MyCloud app view. All pics shown are raw samples (.cr2). Provided Apple decoder recognises the format you shouldn’t have any problems.

Thank you for the feed back DM,

I have a look at the video later and see where the transfer of video to iPad went.

I re tested video transfer WD to laptop, time is different why un sure.

Still much slower than yours, would you be kind enough to let me know the router you are using.

Here is a sky router the latest model 5hz.

Transfer took 2/3 mins for a 534 megs over wifi, I re do this on iPad using the WD app, probably take longer I suspect.

With the raw images, even though my camera fuji s5 pro is listed as being in the available preview and working with the app WD.

I am not able to see the raw images, any chance you can send me a raw pic which I can place on my WD my cloud and see if I can achieve a preview please.

image below is a transfer from wd to laptop using 5ghz router at a distance of 5 feet.

I think this maybe the reason why I cannot see any movie file on the IOS iPad

It does refer to PC side I have not checked the Mac side re 500 megs max transfer - suspect 500 megs is the largest file for free uses or maybe total then you need to purchase the program perhaps ?

Rob, to answer your questions:

1. What router am I using? For the transfer from wd to iPad I don’t use or need a router. I just go to iPad settings, wireless connections and choose the 5ghz wireless server built into the wireless Pro. I can choose from 2.4 or 5 GHz networks. Obviously the 5ghz is much faster. The wd server makes a separate connection to my broadband router to allow me to continue to use my internet (but this connection is not required for the file transfers).

Does your model wd Wireless have the 5ghz option? The reason I ask is that the first version was only 2.4ghz.

2. Here’s a link where you can download some canon eod raw files (.cr2 format). The top half are jpg so scroll down till you see the Raw images heading for the cr2 Files. https://www.photographyblog.com/previews/canon_eos_70d_photos  Lots of sites offering free raw photos for editing practice.

3. Not viewing raw images? As you say, the Fujifilm S5pro is on the supported list but it appears not to be working in current iOS version. I'd take this up with Apple support first as it doesn’t seem the RAF Files from your camera work with iOS File viewer.

4. File size limit with mobimover. I was not aware of a file size limit. That’s a bummer if correct.  My music library was 4gb but that was made up of small files so I wouldn't have experienced that problem.

cheers

Is that a Pro-only feature, Dave? I can’t find it in the Settings app on my iPad Air 2.

I think that is correct Albert. The first release only had 2.4 ghz, the Pro was dual channel. Very quick.

Thank you for the link to raw images dm.

here are some screen grabs of the WD my cloud device over wifi to IOS

notice lack of preview  where as preview is available when in file browser app.

these images are from the link dm you kindly sent for raw images which I think are cannon, either way they not Fuji- my feelings are WD statement is incorrect and that the app which I suspect is the same for your device as mine.

simple put the designers have not bothered to update the model of my cloud device.

same go’s for Alfred,

alfred notice the screen grab you do have 5 GHz abilities.

DM,

the device you have is like the Gnarbox- the WD I have is see screen grab, not the same as yours.

I am interested in this information please, you  say you can connect to the WD pro at the same time as the WAN?

by hopping WD to your router to wan is this correct?

as I wondered about this device WD pro, but thought I be having to switch connection off from WD pro in order to connect to wan,  say just to collect emails for example.

Hi Rob, I see now where the confusion is happening. You have a wd My Cloud, I have a MyPassport Wireless Pro. It’s a portable dual band wireless HDD with built in battery. Fully portable. Yes, the iPad connects directly to wd (wireless) and wd connects to WAN. This allows very fast transfers between pro and iPad while still giving access to wan Files and internet.

The 2.4ghz band allows connection to older, slower gear and I use that for accessing my vans per which is only 2.4ghz, while still accessing my mobile internet on 5ghz.

Here are all the details: https://www.wd.com/products/portable-storage/my-passport-wireless-pro.html

Both devices use the same wd MyCloud app to access and set up the hdd's.

Cheers

Thanks, Rob, but I wasn’t referring to an apparent lack of 5 GHz abilities! What I meant is that I can’t find a ‘Wireless Connections’ option in the Settings app.

Rob, you can check to see if there are any new firmware updates for your MyCloud, using the MyCloud App. In MyCloud app I have an option to check for firmware updates. There have been a few for my model that fixed up some early issues with copying sdcards reliability. All good now.

When you refer to File Browser app are you using the built in Files app or the third party Filebrowser app?
