Editing a photo *twice* in Mac Photos + Affinity extension

Recommended Posts

I've seen a lot of threads on editing a photo with Affinity via its Mac Photos extension. I can do that. But the problem, I think, is that when you close the extension, it saves all the edits you've made into a single JPG and therefore doesn't remember anything about the edits you've made, in terms of layers etc. So if you go to edit the photo a *second* time using the Affinity Mac Photos extension, Affinity now has no memory of the layers/history of your initial edit. So you can't tweak any of the existing edits; you have to start editing again "from scratch" (though starting with the modified JPG that was saved back to Photos the first time), or you have to first in Photos do "revert to original", and then redo all your edits in Affinity.

So is there any way to use the Affinity Mac Photos extension and save the layers/history for subsequent edits?

You can save as... to save the file as an afphoto file, that will contain all the layers and filter edits, just remember there are destructive processes as well as non-destructive processes when in affinity apps. You can save history with the file but if you scroll back and make an edit the edits that went after it will be wiped. Once you have an afphoto file you can save back to photo as a jpeg.

Thanks much for the reply. I've now tried it, but the "Save As" command appears to be permanently greyed out when I launch Affinity from within Photos using the "Edit with Affinity Photo" command. I can "Save", but that just appears to save edits that I made in Affinity back to Photos (as a JPEG).

In any event, for editing twice to be possible, Photos/Affinity would need to know which photo in Photos corresponds to which .afphoto file (for those photos that have already been edited in Affinity). That seems like a tall order given that Photos doesn't support the .afphoto format.
