Retrieving files and documents from beta version

Recommended Posts

Don't tell me that it's impossible to retrieve files and documents saved on the beta version, as the updates all did until the purchased version?

If so is there any way to get access to the beta?

Please help!

There should be no reason why you can't load a file from the beta into the retail version.

Could you both give more information, then we can try to help…

  • Which OS version? Windows / Mac
  • What type of file?
  • How are you trying to open the file? File > Open / double click / place?
  • What actually happens? Error message / Nothing / Crash / Freeze?
  • Can you start a new file in Publisher?
  • Can you attach the file for others to look at?

Thanks I have OS X El Capitan 10.11.6  all the Beta Publisher files in my folder are in grey. The Affinity Publisher Beta is in my Applications but when I double click it tells me Beta has expired . The same happens when I click on the files. The Retail version works fine when I create new files.

Hi,
On Windows. Having downloaded the new Affinity the files and documents have disappeared completely.

All the Beta version updates held them of course. Now when opening up Affinity, and selecting Open or Open Recent there is just nothing there. It's as if the new download either has deleted the files or can't recognise them.
Thanks

Installing the new version should not have done anything to your files. However, yes, the Recent Files list would be cleared.

If you navigate to the folder where your files are stored they should be there. Note that the new version may start you out in a different folder, as it won't know where you last Opened from in the beta version.

Thanks,
They were 'Affinity' files with the Affinity logo in My Documents, now they aren't, and don't seem to be anywhere else. I'll try trawling again but it'll be in vain.

@gascoyneone I don't use Macs so I don't really know how to advise you. I guess the good news is that you can see the files, even if you can't access them. A quick Google search for "OS X el capitan files greyed out" suggests that this is a known issue with OS X, and that fixing the file date is often the key to resolving the issue.

Hopefully some of the forum regulars are proficient Mac users!?

@Lolddyn

Installing an Affinity app can't have deleted your existing files from My Documents. The installer simply doesn't do that!

  • Search your whole computer (not just My Documents) for .afdesign, .afphoto, .afpub files depending upon which apps you were using.
  • Check the recycle bin.
  • Do you have any sort of backup software running? If so, restore the files from there.

Rummaged the file, 'repaired', tried opening but it's not having it.

In hindsight, it probably wasn't the file - it was probably an earlier update file.
I was saving constantly in the beta, always available and opened.

I have  now in fact deleted the old Beta and the old files can now be read  in Retail

I am almost certain that you could have opened them in the retail app without deleting the beta. If you thought double-clicking on a file was the only way to open it, I'm sure of it. That's because each filetype is assigned a default app that opens it when you double-click it, & since the betas & retail apps are separate, independent apps, your Mac was probably set to open Affinity Publisher documents with the beta instead of the retail one.

You can change that default to any other app that can open that filetype.
