evtonic3
Why does a standard return press give me a double line leading? Should be just a single line, equivalent to leading set. Or are there settings that I'm not seeing?
Staff Lee D Posted May 22, 2015 Staff Share Posted May 22, 2015 Hi evtonic3, A quick solution is Shift + ⏎, however if you wish to see all available settings click on the Paragraph button on the context toolbar or from the Text menu, select Show Paragraph, this will open the Paragraph dialog. Here you can change the paragraph formatting, if you change the After Paragraph setting to 0pt, this will reduce the vertical gap which comes after a standard return. Thanks Lee
Dave Harris
A standard return gives you a paragraph separator, so you get the space set before and after paragraphs in the Paragraph panel. For Frame text, it defaults to 12pt. You normally want some indication of a paragraph break, either with vertical space or with a left indent, or both. We use vertical space by default to give a similar apparance to (eg) paragraphs in this forum. You could get the same result by hitting return twice, but that's less sophisticated typographically because it always gives you a whole leading and you might want paragraph spacing to be bigger or smaller. It will matter more in future when we have text styles, and you'll be able to set the paragraph spacing for a whole document by changing a style sheet. Art text has a different default. That's because it doesn't wrap long lines like Frame text does, and because it's rarely used for multi-paragraph text.
