Hi,

When I click on any of the Personas (Designer or Photo) the workspace is changed to match the appropriate app, as it should be. But, when I click "Edit Document"  Publisher workspace is back, so no appropriate tools to work with.

On the Context Toolbar. When you select an object.

Sorry, still confused. Can you post a screenshot?

You have a document loaded, and switch to another persona (say Designer). The workspace changes.

You select an object and see "Edit document" on the context toolbar?!

Sorry, I was on "Affinity Live" till now.

Let me explain:

  1. You select an object (photo or vector);
  2. Click on the appropriate Persona -- the workspace is changed to that app;
  3. Then Click on "Edit Document" and the Publiher workspace is back.

First, you are in Publisher (Persona);

  1. Select an object;
  2. Just bellow the Personas you can see "Edit Document" and "Replace Document".

You will only see that if your object is an embedded or linked Affinity Document. Not if it is any other type of object - say a JPEG.

As with any linked or embedded document you do have to open it before you can work on it.

Clicking "Edit Document" essentially opens it as a new file within Publisher.

At that point you can switch Personas to work on the file directly within Publisher using Designer or Photo tools.

But instead of Placing the Affinity file into Publisher, try simply opening it directly File > Open… > Choose a Designer / Photo file.

You can then use all of Publishers tool, and seamlessly switch personas to use Designer or Photo.

I guess that you could expect that a linked Affinity file would open in the same Persona as the one you were in when you clicked "Edit Document".

Here is detailed explanation:

I have created a Photo document with several layers and everyone of them contains different picture.

  1. Now, I place this Photo document in Publisher;
  2. Select the Photo Persona -- the Photo workspace comes out, but the Photo document is shown as only one layer (flattened).
  3. When I click on "Edit Document" all layers from the Photo document are shown, but the Photo workspace has gone and Publisher workspace appears.

I simply don't understand the need of "Edit Document" button.

If it is for editing the object in Publisher, then why? I don't need that.

When I click on one of the Personas I expect the object to be ready for editing -- just as you open it in the appropriate app.

The Photo document is linked and in Publisher is shown as flattened.

When I click on Photo Persona the same document is still shown as flattened.

When I click on "Edit Document" I can see all the layers, but the Photo workspace has gone.

mmm..I am not getting that...

1. new file
2. add afphoto (3 layers including images)
3. to edit:

a. d-click imported file (linked in Layers) works!
b. Go to Photo Persona (flat).then d-click=opens embedded file in Publisher Persona.(editable inc layers) (displays Publisher tools)
c. Go back to Photo=Photo tools editable with open embedded file...

I cannot see any issues it is just a matter of switching the personas with the files!

So, how you will edit the photo with Publisher tools? Photo workspace should be active.

That is strange...I can get to work....remember you need the embedded file selected when you switch personas.

If you open the afphoto file in Publisher rather than place the layers appear in the publisher persona..

Why should I open a Photo file in Publisher?

What if I work on magazine with a lots of pictures? How do you imagine to open them? All of them are placed in Publisher and linked. I never embed a picture.

Hello @Petar Petrenko

Maybe this video that A_B_C has kindly done will help.

Here is a little video that may show you that your initial disappointment is probably unwarranted. :)

As the previous posters said,

  • make sure to place your .aphoto document, using File > Place … or the shortcut. The placed document must be called Linked document in the Layers Panel. Otherwise, you are going down the wrong route.
  • Then you will have the option to edit the linked document within any of the three studio environments of Publisher.
  • All layers, adjustments, etc. will be there!
  • Note that all your edits within Publisher (sorry for the awful tint in my video!) are entirely non-destructive and do not affect the source image. So, for instance, when you place the image another time, you will get the original source image again.

Does that make sense? :)

Obviously nobody understand me. Maybe it is my bad English, though. Aaaah.

Please, follow my steps:

I place a multilayered .aphoto file with pictures on every layer (mo effects). And it is linked, no embeded. I do not work with embeded pictures at all.

The .aphoto file shows as flattened image (only one layer) in Publisher.

When I click on Photo Persona I expect I can work immediately on the file as I do when I open it in Photo (because the Photo workspace comes out). But it is not true, because the .aphoto file is still flattened (no layers).

When I click on "Edit document" I can finaly see all the layers of the .aphoto file, but I can't work on it because Photo's workspace is gone. Publisher's workspace comes back.

When you click "edit document " a temporary tab opens this is called <Embedded>, as this is a new tab it defaults to the Publisher Persona, you just need to choose the Photo Persona, you now have access to all of your layers for editing, when you have finished just close the temporary tab that has opened. You will now be back in your original document with the edits applied. That tab has the title <Embedded> but your file is still linked. I think that the "Embedded" is referring to the edits that you make within Publisher, they do not affect your original linked files.

Why it can be simple, when it can be complicated?

Only one click, on the Photo Persona, should be enough to start working on the image. Why so much workarround I can't understand.
