Publisher is already at 1.7. What is the likelihood we will reach 2.0 within a year or so? I don't want to put out $40 for Publisher just to then have to pay another $40-60 to upgrade in a year-ish once we reach 2.0.

Also, any idea if existing users will get a substantial discount once the upgrade hits? If we don't that'd be a bit of a slap in the face, having to pay as much as new users.

It is not a slap in the face. You are getting a product at a price that is vastly cheaper then the competition. I see the version number more as a number for the suite then for the individual product. If a bigger update (like a version 2.0) is in the works I am sure it would also take longer to make so I can't see it being released soon anyways.

Are you seriously thinking about spending or not spending $40 for a pro level dtp software because you THINk there MIGHT be a paid update next year or not?

Either you like Publisher and want to spend the money, or you want to wait until it has a specific feature that you are currently missing and wait until then.

Don't overthink what could be and that you could be disappointed about something that might or might not happen next year and could or not could cost you 40 bucks that you don't need to spend if you don't need or want the new features or not that might or might not get programmed ... this kind of doubt and overthinking just makes you unhappy.

You will never be forced to upgrade.  Version 1.x will continue to work even when version 2 is released.  You can choose to upgrade or not depending on if you want any of the new features that will be in version 2

Affinity publisher is aimed for professionals who create documents for print, not hobbyists. If you can't make $40 back from your work, it might not be for you in the first place.

Indeed. It's in fact a bargain, even if you're poor. Some people seem to have forgotten the real price of software and just don't understand the crazy amount of time, effort and passion developers, ui-designers, testers, consultants and what not put on software to create it so you can work faster and make more money with these tools.

Great professional software could easily cost hundreds to thousands of euros in a shop. And it used to be like that too for a long time. It has years of experience put inside it making you work so much faster you earn the money back in no time on the job. But some people in the age of 'open source', free apps (actually making money by using or selling your data) and dollar-apps for your iPhone or Android device, seem to have forgotten the real cost and value production software and compare real value software with buggy, but free, open source tools.

I think it's amazing Affinity makes this stable, performant and highly productive and professional software for only 50 euros and I'm very surprised if people are really this picky about this price to be honoust. To me that's a lack of understanding what it takes to create it and what makes it stand out above the 'just not right'-software out there.

It depends on the level of the user, a graphic designer who studies design and produces work in exchange for money will appreciate the software, and we all know how much of a bargain to have affinity software for $50 and even down to $35 and $40 discounts. Other users might see them just as a nice game to produce cool images or make a document here and there won't value them as much as we do.

While open source software fail to provide professional quality features (having used Inkscape/Gimp and tried Scribus), they still have a value of providing accessible source code for programmers to learn how such software is made and how it works, providing free easy install alternatives, and many libraries/utilities can be even used by commercial software, even Affinity software incorporate a lot of them. Just check 3rd party licenses under Help/About...

I always figured that once they get through most of the bug fixes this will be the point at which they can then switch over to bigger updates. Given the bugs and crashes I have encountered with Publisher there will most likely be smaller updates for a while. I can see Photo and Designer moving on to bigger updates before Publisher.

We know one thing. The 7 man "strong" development team will be busy for a long time now developing Publisher for iPad too and a DAM and the rest of the suite simultaneously.

Meanwhile if you are on a budget - or cant wait for certain features - or if you are the curious type like me always checking out everything the market has to offer - this is getting closer for free:

I am curious about Inkscape. No fan of the UI and performance and I can't use it for professional work. Earlier versions crashed to often. But if someone is waiting for cool and advanced vector features while waiting 3 - 6 years for Serif to implement such features... Inkscape is free and delivers. Today.

Inkscape will have performance-wise improvements for version 1.0. But when that stable version will be here is something we don't know; however, testing the Alpha version can be worth it for some of the features and improvements.

I was all into it before Designer hit the Windows platform, for the work I do is more convenient, but I still have Inskcape there.

Best regards!

P. S.: By the way, the standard version of the interface is far from being that pretty, or is it the default for 1.0? I will try it later.

This is Inkscape 1.0 alpha with a dark theme and "symbolic icons" I think they call them. You can customize icons, theme, dark or light mode.

Also interesting for the Apple crowd out there:

Mac Application
Inkscape is now a first-rate native macOS application, and no longer requires XQuartz to operate.

It has a standard Mac-style menu bar (rather than a menu bar within the window). Keyboard shortcuts now use the command (⌘) key rather than the control key. Retina display screen resolution is now supported. The build is now cleanly 64-bit, a prerequisite for MacOS 10.15 Catalina and beyond.

I always followed the open source alternatives closely - mostly their potential in poor countries is extremely important, I like helping creatives wherever I find them (and I have met some with zero resourses... zero, zip, nada, nothing) - but the Inkscape project simply have to dedicate a year to usability and interface initiatives... massively.

If only Google would sponsor Summer of Usability to lift these and many other open source products with awesome engines into the 3rd millennium usabilitywise. And btw also share resources and coordinate more.

I see, so this is Custom. Thanks for your answer. I will definetly take a look into it when the stable version arrives.

So do I. I've always been keen to the Software Libre initiatives, and some of the have had great success like Linux and Blender. And yes, they need some help with UI/UX. Otherwise, great products out there.

Best regards!

I am very sure 50 euro is a very affordable and good price for such a product like Publisher. As a registered user of Publisher, you will get a discount when there is a major update. At least, this was the case with the Plus range. However, I will gladly pay full price for a major update even when it is next year.

I really fail to see why asking 40 euro a year for an update will be a slap in the face. Are you serious? When you create a business card for a customer today, will you still update that card over one year for free? That is your answer.

If you do not want to pay for software, then you have to go the open source route. I do that for Blender but decided to support them every month by getting a subscription. From the money their customers pay them, they support the development. The same is true for Serif. Implementing new features will cost a lot of money, which has to come from their sales.

By the way, I paid for 2 Designer, 2 Photo and 2 Publisher licenses despite the fact we are also operating from Botswana. When we decided on the Affinity Suite, we were not bothered about the price but if we could use it or not. We just bought a license from the very beginning of those applications and start using them. We did not regret our choice for one moment.

I had a discussion a few weeks ago with a colleague which claimed that Designer and Photo were for professionals (she started using those a few months ago), but that Publisher was just for amateurs (she does not use Publisher). I do not understand why people get that perception, but Publisher together with Designer and Photo are aimed at the professional market. Anyway, I create nice things with the whole suite. That is what counts in the end.
