[1.7] Unsupported filetype error with TIFF files from Apple Photos

Recommended Posts

I have about a dozen tiff files in my Apple Photos library, mostly scans of old family photos, but also a few from other sources. In 1.6.x the Edit > Edit in Affinity Photo option worked fine. (Not to be confused with the right-click "Edit With > Affinity Photo" option, which never has worked.)

Issue: When I try this with Affinity Photo 1.7.0, I get this:
414356756_FailedtoOpen.jpg.10c3685b490d606f8fbb2b5e2a4705f9.jpg

This only happens with tiff files in the Apple Photos library; all other filetypes work fine. Moreover, if I go to the ~/Library/Group Containers/6LVTQB9699.com.seriflabs.extensions/intermediates folder in Finder & delete all the "Apple Photos Document.tif.afextensiondocument" files, a new one reappears every time I try the "Edit in Affinity Photo" option again, & the date created & modified values do not change, as if the file was never deleted.

I have tried quitting & restarting Affinity Photo, restarting my iMac, rebuilding my Apple Photos library, running Disk First Aid on my startup drive, & maybe a few other things, but nothing helps.

Oddly, if I use QuickLook to preview the file in the intermediates folder, that opens a QL window that shows the preview, with the "Open with Affinity Photo" button at the top:

The above QL screenshot is from https://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA05486. I downloaded & imported the tiff version of it into Apple Photos today, so this is not just something happening with old scanned photos or anything like that.

In another thread we just found that .tiff files will not load into the Assets panel, but .tif (one f not two) will.

Try renaming one of your files to see if that helps?

Thanks, but according to the Info window in Apple Photos, the files already use the "tif" file extension. Also, Apple says it is not a good idea to modify any file in the Apple Photos library other than through that app (because it can confuse the app's internal links & lead to data loss), so i am not willing to try changing the extension via Finder, Terminal, etc. (& Apple Photos does not allow changing the file extension).

We have fixed this ready for the beta build tomorrow. Once the beta has been validated it will go to the store for public release on June 19th.

Good to know. Can I assume that as usual, the beta will be a completely separate app & not share preferences (or at least changes to them) with the retail version?

I'm afraid so - but the life of this beta run is limited by the June 19th deadline for all fixes to go to store, so hopefully not as annoying as the longer term beta runs.

Also, our guidance with this 1.7.1 beta will also change - we will be recommending users to use it in preference to the store build.

Thanks,

A
