High Pass Filter Not Working as Expected iPad

Recommended Posts

I don’t know if this is a problem, or I don’t understand how the High Pass Filter works.  Before updating to version 1.7, I would use the High Pass Filter to sharpen my images.  (Select High Pass filter, enter pixel size, select Monochromatic, select Live Update.  Then go to the Layers menu, Layer Options, select the blend mode, usually set to Linear Light.  Since I have updated to version 1.7, the Live Update option is missing, and selecting layer options doesn’t change the high pass filter to sharpen the image.  So am I just not using the High Pass Filter correctly or, is there a problem?

I am experience the same problem. I’ve using high pass sharpening for the last year on affinity ipad without any issues. But since updating to 1.7 it is not working , even after ticking “add live filter”. The only way can make it work with the new 1.7 is to duplicate layer, then high pass and merge down, but then it is destructive and I can’t go back to the layer and readjust

I noticed the same problem.  Then I went back and tried again.  This time I made sure not to click “Merge Down”.  That seems to protect the “Live Filter”.  I was then able to go back and change the settings in the High Pass Filter.  I hope this works for you.

It looks like the filter does not apply the settings to the layer and only apply is once the merge down clicked or apply , but the it s destructive

Use the Merge Visible to create a new layer (non destructively).

@DM1 , I’ve tried as you explained but is as if the effect of the filter doesn’t show intill i merge all.

Could you go to iPad settings, control panel and enable screen recording then enable show touches in AP. Then do a quick recording of what is happening? Recordings are saved to your photo library and can be uploaded by the 'choose files ' link at bottom of post. This will help identify any procedural errors and give the mods something to work with. Also details of your iPad and iOS version. :)

I see two things that are different.  First, when I apply the High Pass Filter, it becomes a sub-layer to the background image.  This is probably why mine apples the sharpening with out merging down.  Second, I use the Linear Light  blending mode.  I don’t think that will make much difference.  If you can get the filter to be a sub-layer to your background image (I make sure the background image is selected, before I apply the filter) then try different blend modes and see which you like best.

I hope this helps.  I have attached two images to show what I have described.

Thank you for everyone’s assistance and input. I think I know what the problem is but not sure how to explain it. It got something to do with the rendering performance of Affinity photo and hopefully Affinity photo will be able to assist. If I apply the high pass filter like all the methods above the “before “ Is sharper than the” after” , without me merging any layers, however when I export that slight blurry “ after” photo, it shows perfect sharp and the high pass filter applied. It got something to do with metal accelerator performance

In iPad settings you can turn on screen recording. In AP turn on Show touches. Swipe down from top right of screen to reveal console and tap the little button to start recording. Swipe up to clear console. Apply the filter in AF, swipe down from corner to bring up console, tap little button to stop recording. Attach recording to your post.
