Upgrade to Designer 1.7.0 (Win) fails

Recommended Posts

Tried to upgrade Affinity Designer from 1.6.5.135 under Windows 10 to 1.7.0. It tried to install .net, which failed saying a parameter was wrong (did not say which parameter). It wouldn’t even bother me that much if the old Designer stopped popping up the message asking me if I want to download the upgrade.

So, what now?

It would help if you can provide more details about your version of Windows 10. If you use Windows Start > Settings, then under System click on About, what version number and build number are shown?

I too am getting exactly the same! Trying to upgrade to the new 1.7 (using Windows 10) however, it seems to be doing something with .Net!? Then I get this message;

When I go into the Affinity programmes, it just keeps asking me if I want to upgrade!!

Please disregard -  this is re Photo, not Designer.  Sorry.

Booted up version 1.6.5.123 but did not see any prompt/icon that would direct me to start the upgrade.

Closed and restarted program three times but not seeing anything to start the upgrade.

Using Windows 10 Home, version 1803, build 17134.765

Thanks,

Harris

That's good, as 1607 is the minimum supported Windows 10 release for Designer 1.7.

If you press and hold the Windows key then press R, you'll get a "Run" box. Type %temp%\AffinitySetup into the box and press enter. In the File Explorer that opens, find the directory with the date/time that corresponds to your installation attempt. In it, you can examine the Setup.log and SetupUI.log and look for more details on the error. I generally start by searching for the word Error, though that doesn't always work. I suppose you could also search for ".net" since the issue seems to be related to that.

You might also try installing .NET 4.7.2 manually. This Microsoft page may help with that, but Serif may also be interested in your setup logs to see what went wrong.

OK, I tried to install .net 4.7.2 manually. That failed, too. It opened the following in my web browser:

@AdamStanislav & @HellmansAre you able to send me your setup log files?

You can access the setup log files by navigating to %TEMP%/AffinitySetup/ from the Run Dialog. You will want the folder with the latest Created/Modified Date. In this folder you will have two .log files: Setup.log & SetupUI.log. Please upload them to my Dropbox account here and I will look into this further for you: https://www.dropbox.com/request/Hj01R5tVxFz4mRdpx5H4

According to the error message, it may be related to the Windows update service or the Windows Module Installer service, can you please have a try with the following:

1. Go to "Control Panel\System and Security\Administrative Tools" and double-click "services"

2. Right click on “Windows Update” and select ‘Restart’

3. Re-run the .NET Framework 4.7.2 installer as administrator

4. If it not works, please reproduce step1 and right-click the “Windows Modules Installer” and select ‘Start’

5. Re-run the .NET Framework 4.7.2 installer as administrator

Before installation, please follow the below tips:

1. Make sure Windows update is already up-to-date

2. Clean up %temp% folder

3. Temporarily disable anti-virus software

If Microsoft's own installer for .NET has a problem, perhaps you need to look for Windows issues? The information that v_kyr quoted above looks like a good starting place.

That's exactly what I thought, one of those services, fine so you got it now working.

Yes, thank you. Before I only turned windows Update on and that did not help. but after you asked again, I also turned Windows Module Installer and that worked. After that I turned both off (having them on causes some problems on my system) but I was able to update Designer and it is working.
