finger modifiers when using nodes

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Before the update when I selected a node with the node tool I frequently used finger modifiers. One finger to move the line along the same angled path. 2 fingers to move it at right angels.

Now when I put down any number of fingers if just opens a selection tool and selects multiple nodes. Occasionally, if I move the node a little then place the fingers it works - but generally its already out of alignment before the modifier works.

Has the gesture changed?

Many thanks

Laura

I can't find anything documented, but selecting multiple nodes is done selecting one node, placing two fingers on screen, drawing around all nodes you want to select with pencil or finger and before releasing pencil or finger, lift the two fingers.

Hi L.Leslie,

When moving a node it is has been moved to a two finger hold to move along the path at the same angle or to snap to 45degree angles. As DM1 said, you can also use this two finger hold to initiate a Lasso Selection as well.

Lasso selection does not seem to work for me. I get the lasso, but it selects nothing...

You need to lift the two fingers before lifting the pencil. Alternatively start by tapping pencil to create a selection node. Drag the node to create a line. Drag the line to create shapes covering the nodes..

OK, when I release the fingers it works. Thanks for the tip!

Yes, I also find the change unintuitive. In previous version finger modifiers worked very straightforwardly: 1 finger did x vs 2 did y vs 3 did z. Now I fight with it - seems no matter how many fingers I put down it just wants to make a selection box and its a real struggle to get the nodes to move the way I want.

I find it easier to enable the on-screen modifier keys.

Preferences > Interface > On-screen modifier keys: On > Done.

  • Select the object first with the Move tool then change to the Node tool, or alternatively select the object by tapping it with the Node tool.
  • Click the little arrow to the right of the context-specific options at the bottom of the screen (I'm using a Mini, so possibly on larger screens this might not be necessary) - it reveals the Constrain and Ignore Snapping on-screen keys. When no nodes are selected, they have selection functions instead.
  • For Lasso selection, hold a finger on the Ignore Snapping key and then drag a selection with the Apple Pencil or your finger.
  • Raise the Pencil or finger first (tends to be intuitive as you've finished drawing your selection), then take your finger off the Ignore Snapping key.

Notes: The Constrain key allows multiple cumulative rectangle node selection areas. Once you have dragged your selection, the keys do what their labels suggest.
