OK, I must be really stupid.  I cannot grasp how the Gradient Tool works in Affinity.  I use it all the time when in On1 and I think it works very similar to Affinitys.  I think this is a great tool but I'm just not getting it.  I want to use Affinity for most of my editing and On1 for refining certain things but i just don't get it.

Can anyone help this old man on how to use this tool.

Snowcap, that's a very broad topic.  Following are a few tutorials out on YouTube.  If you can narrow down the question a bit we should be able to help.

Without knowing your workflow (how you are trying to use the gradient) it's hard to determine - what's wrong. Try inserting a screenshot or video recording of your procedure.

in AP: Drag & release. There you have a gradient. Mind that you have to have an existing pixel or fill layer to apply gradient to. Maybe other layer types accept gradient too, I have not checked.
