Using Affinity photo as an external editor with Raw Therapee

Recommended Posts

Hi ,

I'd like to use Raw Therapee to process my raw images , and then use affinity for further editing .

Raw therapee has a custom command line in "preferences" to enter the installation file of affinity photo , C:\Program Files\Affinity\Photo\ doesn't work !

Any ideas

Regards

Graham......

Point in Raw Therapee prefs via an "Custom command line:" entry to the Photo EXE file (the absolute path including the exe file, so something like: C:\Program Files\Affinity\Affinity Photo\Photo.exe), like shown here for PS Elements ...

☛ Affinity Designer 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Photo 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Publisher 1.10.8 ◆ OSX El Capitan
☛ Affinity V2.3 apps ◆ MacOS Sonoma 14.2 ◆ iPad OS 17.2

That should work if @scarbrog purchased Photo via the Affinity Store and accepted the default installation location during the install. However, a different approach would be needed if the purchase occurred through the Microsoft Store.

Hi  v_kyr and Walt ,

Thanks very much for your reply , tried the path you suggested but still got the dreaded "Cannot start editor , please set the correct path in preferences" !!

I purchased photo via the affinity store.

I right clicked the affinity logo on my desktop , open file location , copy and paste C:\Program Files\Affinity\Photo into preferences , click edit in external editor and it takes me back to the file location instead of affinity photo

Regards

@scarbrog

You need to copy and paste exactly what @walt.farrell posted earlier:  C:\Program Files\AffinityPhoto\Photo.exe.  Your current entry points to the Affinity Photo directory, not the program.

I merely quoted @v_kyr , to whom any credit belongs :)

Check with the Win Explorer or some file manager tool if that path exists "C:\Program Files\Affinity\Photo" and if there resides a "Photo.exe" executable inside. If yes, apply that path "C:\Program Files\Affinity\Photo\Photo.exe" instead for the above shown. Otherwise, identify the full path where APh is installed and where it's executable main file (EXE file) resides and use that path in the Raw Therapee prefs.

Hi All,

This is my first post here. I intended to share this as a tutorial, but as I'm new it seems like my posting abilities are limited. However, I would like to chime in with a solution for those of us who purchased Affinity through the Microsoft store.

A bit of context: Windows treats store apps differently than standard .exe files, and even installs them on a separate hidden folder. Because of this, if you bought Affinity Photo from the Windows Store you won't be able to follow the instructions above as you'll need to tell Rawtherapee to launch the App User Model Id of Affinity Photo.

Here's how to do it.

  • First: You'll need to find Affinity Photo's AppUserModelId. You can do that by following the instructions here. Follow only up until Step 6. Note that the tutorial uses the Windows Reading app as an example. Remember that you're looking for Affinity Photo and you should find it in that same folder.
  • Second: In Rawtherapee, go to settings and then scroll to external editor and select "path"
  • Third: type in (without quotation marks) the following: "shell:AppsFolder\xxxxxx" and replace xxxxxx for your App Model User Id

If everything was done correctly, RawTherapee should now be exporting images to Affinity Photo!

Enjoy!

Although I have now installed the .msi version of all the Affinity software, this will come in handy for many other things. Thanks.
