Problems with exporting a file in affinity designer

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have a problem with saving an illustration as pdf for printing and saving it as psd and eps. When I'm trying to save a file affinity designer (ipad version) is suddenly closing by itself and the process of generating export is never finished.

I will be very grateful for your help guys... I really don't know what's wrong and how to solve this issue :(

Unfortunately I can’t open the file on my original 9.7” iPad Pro. Perhaps someone with a newer device with more RAM can try otherwise it will probably have to have a developer open it to debug what is wrong..

edit: seems to open ok on my MacBook. I’ll have a look at it.

Thank you very much for your answer. If this information might help somehow in the future: I drew this illustration on ipad pro 12,9" and when I'm trying to zoom little elements (affter adding textures to the mountains and more little elements like grass or dandelions) the app turns off suddenly, so exactly the same happens when I'm trying to generate a pdf, eps and psd file. It works with jpeg and png as far as I've tried. But I need to export this file for print and as eps file too. Also if I want I can't zoom so much the whole project to see the details.

Seems to perform ok on MacBook, including exporting as pdf. I’m out of the house now in my car now so will look again when I return home unless someone else spots anything wrong.

The file opens fine on my iPad Pro 10.5 but not generating PDF. I will see if I can find what is causing it.

PDF export from Mac seems ok, but EPS export seems to be taking ages to do.

Thank you so much for sharing pdf but the textures and gradients I used for mountains for example didn't appear in pdf... how can I fix it? It's my first drawing ever I want to print and I will appreciate any advice how to fix this... I only use ipad for drawing and I don't have desktop version of affinity designer. If you also can't export eps it means I can't use any textures or maybe I drew too many elements? What do you think?

Think it is just the complexity of the parts, here is the pdf hopefully with the missing info. The EPS file took over 3 hours to produce  on my MacBook. Hopefully a developer will know why.

Unfortunatelly pdf didn't export gradients and textures. It looks very different than the original affinity designer file:( Well, I'm really grateful for your help. Thank you! Now I'm kind of terrified that it took you over 3 hours to export eps file cause I can't even open it on my ipad... while importing the file affinity designer shuts down... so maybe the problem is as you said complexity of the illustration or something else :(

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to make a little update in case someone else in the future will face the same problem as me. I figured out that the issue probably comes from Frankentoon Propaganda kit textures I used in the illustration. First of all I removed all of the gradients from my illustration and then I removed all textures from Frankentoon Propaganda kit. Then I was able to export my file as PDF. Before when I couldn't export file as PDF I used textures and applied them as texture masks. Now I used same textures but as styles and I removed gradients. I can export PDF and EPS with no problem. But I have another question, how can I use gradients and then export them as PDF? Is there any chance to do this? I would love to learn how to make illustration with gradients and then print it.

My second question occured after I exported file to PDF. I don't know what happened with some objects after exporting, it looks like the position of them changed and I don't know why. I saved my file a few times and it always looks different than in .afdesign

Thank you in advance for your help guys!

I found I could print the first 13 layers but after adding the 14th it was too much for the iPad.

Thank you very much for the help! I messed up a lot in my first file, but finally I removed a lot of hidden layers, groups... textures and it works now. For sure it would perform better on desktop version of Affinity Designer. It was too much for the iPad as you said! :$

If anyone will have some free time to see my updated file and check out what happens with little owl's position after exporting to PDF/X-4 please let me know^_^

Looking at your pictures above I would say it’s a layer positioning issue. In PDF format the layer is showing above the truck.
