Jakey80
Hello, I'm an affinity novice. Struggling to work out from tutorials how to colour a specific area of background. Have attached photo example. Want to eliminate busy area in top right hand corner and replace with the grey of the rest of the background. Have managed to select area using brush tool but that is as far as can get! Any tips/advice appreciated!

Staff stokerg Posted May 9, 2019 Staff Share Posted May 9, 2019 Hi Jakey80 and Welcome to the Forums, One method to do this (i'm sure others will post other methods) would be to use the Pen Tool to curve shape around the top right corner and then fill it with grey and add a little noise to it. I've attached a sample .afphoto file to this post. The steps need are: 1) Use Pen Tool to create the shape of the area 2) Set the fill to grey (you can use the colour picker on the Colour Panel to select the grey of the background already in the image 3) To add Noise, on the Colour Panel, click on Opacity and it will change to noise, you can then move the slider to add some noise This video should help show the process in a bit more detail : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAne5cdDNmE background.afphoto

You have set the stroke color of the Curve layer to grey. To set the fill color, click on the color circle below & to the right of the grey one to choose the fill color you want; or just click on the curved, double-headed arrow to the right of the grey one to swap stroke & fill colors. Jakey80
Ok thank you R C-R. Is it not possible to select the area with the brush tool (as in attached) and then just fill with chosen colour? Seems more accurate than pen tool as marching ants find the contours of object quicker.

Jakey80
ok thanks. So have area defined with brush tool marching ants as pic above shows. How do I then add colour to this area? New layer? invert it? sorry, complete beginner and none of dozen videos i've watched seem to illustrate step by step of how to do this. R C-R
12 minutes ago, Jakey80 said: How do I then add colour to this area? You can paint on it with the Paint Brush Tool. For a less destructive alternative, copy & paste with the marching ants selection active, which will create a new layer. Painting on that layer, still with the marching ants selection active, will confine the paint to that new layer, so you can delete or hide it, or use a different layer blend mode, or whatever, without affecting the original image layer in any way.
