Remember blend mode between strokes with brush tool

Recommended Posts

I select brush tool and choose multiply mode for the layer. Then I draw a line and it draws it without the layer settings: blend mode is normal.

I select multiply mode it adds it to that line. I take the Apple Pencil off the iPad and go to draw another line and the multiply blend mode is missing on that line.

I want it to keep my layer settings from line to line until I change them rather than forgetting them. Is there something I can set to do that?

I want blending like real life watercolours from stroke to stroke.

Affinity Designer 1.6.4.45 on iPad 2008 with Apple Pencil.

Actually, I wonder now if it would be really necessary. I found a satisfying workaround:

Create a new empty layer:

  • In layer properties, (...), set it as `Multiply`.
  • Draw many strokes in it. Those strokes won't multiply each other, because they're in the same layer.
  • This will conform your first 'color' layer.

Now, create a second layer, on top of the previous:

  • Again, set it as `Multiply´.
  • And draw as many strokes as you want.
  • This will conform your second `color´ layer.

I find this method close to what watercolor forces you to do: working in color layers and waiting the previous layer to dry before starting the second.
