Opening files in separate windows (instead of tabs)

Recommended Posts

Discussed HERE sort of. I think it shouldn't have to be either/or. You should be able to click and drag a tab away and let it become a separate window like practically every other app works with tabs while the remaining tabs stay in place - Creative Suite, Safari, Finder, any app that uses the built-in macOS tabs does it this way.

If you're on Windows, use Window > Float (to float a specific tab) or Window > Float All to float all of them

You can also just drag them from their docked positions but trying to easily arrange two documents side by side is just as frustrating as Brexit at the moment

We need and easy option implemented for doing that

Many (most?) Windows applications with a multi-document interface offer ‘Cascade’ and ‘Tile’ options.

I just discovered something interesting (on Windows):

With two documents open and tabbed do the following:

  1. drag one tab to make it floating and then drag it to the left end of the screen. This puts the document window on the left half of the screen and shows on the right half all open windows (this is a Windows standard behaviour).
  2. in the right half you click on APub and it resizes to fill the right half of the screen.
  3. drag the remaining tab to make it float and then drag it to the right end of the screen.

Result: two documents neatly side by side. This also works with four files in the corners of the screen. But it is certainly not as flexible as built in arrange capabilities.

I've sworn to myself not to comment on Brexit. So I won't say anything about the second part of your post ;-)

Cant get the above to work at all, not sure if it's because I have 2 screens, Windows 8.1 or just don't understand what you are describing.

If you have the capability and time a video might be useful but don't go out of your way to make one as I currently just work around the "problem" when I need to

I am not sure when the feature 'snap to left half of the screen' was introduced. It may have come with Windows 10 and that could be the cause why it is not working for you (or the two monitors what I cannot verify).

Sorry, I'm not at the computer with APub right now (thus now video).

Watch me file this as a bug report!

(Thanks also for pointing me towards the old discussion.)
