AP How to make everything except one part out of focus?

Recommended Posts

I've been attempting to learn to use AP to replace PS, and just realized I have No Idea how to Use AP for anything other than what I used PS for - and frankly that wasn't much.
HELP
I have an image of a piece of jewelry in the middle of candy. How do I put everything except the piece of jewelry out of focus?
It seems like it can't be that hard, but I've been at this for an hour and I can't seem to figure it out.

Sadly, I'm using my phone, so it's not a great picture to begin with. (I gave up big fancy cameras when I realized my phone is more talented than I am.)
Thank you

Open image and make a duplicate.

Add a mask to the top layer and apply the blur effect as you need.

Select the mask and mask out the blurred jewelry so that the image underneath comes through in focus.

Flatten image.

Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.

These are not my own words but I sure like this quote.

Have you considered using a Live Depth of Field Filter for this, like in this Jewelry in Candy.afphoto example?

It looks pretty realistic to me, & it is non-destructive. You might not want the serrated edge of the Reese's wrapper in focus but that could be fixed destructively with some careful Blur Tool work on the pixel layer, or non-destructively on a copied selection of that part of the layer pasted into a new layer above it.

EDIT: for a little extra 'bling' to the bracelet you could add some Vibrance & Clarity to the live filter:

There are many ways to do this

One common way is to apply a Live Filter Layer to the image (e.g. Gaussian Blur)

Then use the Brush Tool (set to black) and paint directly on the Live Filter Layer to hide the blur on the parts of the image you don't want to be blurred.

If you accidentally unblur an area you did not mean to, just change the colour of the brush to white and repaint that area to add the blur again.

A selectively blurred image is attached.

Or take a few images and layer them. If you want all of the ring in focus I would not lay the Reese bar over the ring as it will look odd that the ring is in focus and the bar is not.

  1. Take an image of the ring on its own with a plain background evenly lit, you could suspend the ring with fishing wire (very fine and almost transparent) so you don't get shadows on the background and it will make it easier to remove the background, try with white, black and a bright coloured card.
  2. Then take a picture of the sweets, remember to take the images at the same angle and the same distance.
  3. Layer the images in Affinity Photo and adjust to suit, this will also help with other edits like reflections and shadows, the image above could be used as a reference to and shadows to the sweet layer.

Also make sure those glints are in the correct places, the one on the black is wrong and should be where the white dot is on the black jewel., the ones on the bottom ring are also wrong.
