The period character has an Alternate set of an Ellipsis so that is why you're getting three dots. This is why I said you want to set it as a Character Style so you can sparingly apply it to the characters you wish to change, as a paragraph panel would apply it to everything in the paragraph.

Well, it is not a very good idea for a long book where I have to format all direct speech sentences with italic.

Then use Find and Replace to find the characters you want to apply the style to, and apply the style using that. See attached video.

Yeah Sean. it's really good and even faster and better than InDesign.

Thank you very much for you time and effort helping me to solve such a big transition problem (Quark, InDesign -> Publisher) for me.

Now waiting for footnotes only. I hope they will come (very) soon.
