Masking out icons without background

Recommended Posts

Hi, Mark,

I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to A Photo, but here are 2 things to try. Make the selection brush smaller, and turn on snap to edges. That should grab contiguous areas of the flat colors. Alternatively, use the flood selection tool, set it to a small tolerance, maybe 2%, and turn off contiguous. That should pick out any area in the image w. the sampled colors.

Select CHANNELS and view the COMPOSITE RED/GREEN/BLUE CHANNELS. Select the channel which gives the best contrast - in this example I used RED CHANNEL.

I used the FLOOD SELECT TOOL and dragged it to the right (which increases tolerance) until I had a reasonable selection. You will see marching ants on all parts selected.

I then switched to the SELECTION BRUSH TOOL, made the brush size small and selected all the parts the FLOOD FILL missed.

Copy & paste the selection to a new layer (this will happen automatically).

Note: You will see that there are spaces between the coloured parts where the font was ( your example didn't have them so you will have to worry about that).

Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.

These are not my own words but I sure like this quote.
