I tried that just now and it did make the document transparent, so I exported it as eps.  When I went to reopen it, its back to a white background :(

Did you examine it in another app, or only in Designer?

On Win you can try with the free version of Microsoft Expression Design 4, or with LibreOffice Draw etc. - Another always good take for EPS on Win are the Ghostscript Interpreter and Ghostview as a viewer.

Try this.

  • Create a document in Affinity Designer
  • Add rectangle and colour it to something other than white, maybe a nice blue #D2EBEB
  • Now File > Place... the eps file in that document.

Can you see the blue?

If you can, congratulations you have an eps with a transparent background.

Inkscape can open EPS, you generally have to ungroup the eps after opening or import, sometimes you have to ungroup twice or more to get the individual components.

Well in AD and in most other graphics apps that gray checkerboard style background pattern already stays for, or indicates you the transparency here.

Did you used a document with a transparent background when you created your web buttons and menus? - You can set that up when you create an AD document under the color tab on the new document panel. Further you can try to make a copy of your file, then open that file copy and apply/change the document background to transparency on the document settings panel (again see the checkbox under the color tab on that one).

As you can see, in case you created the document with a solid color background (a white one etc.) you can also change the document background afterwards then to be instead transparent for the document and then resave as EPS.

Note further that not all third party viewers etc. do always show up a transparent backgrounds, meaning here even a drawing might does have transparency, some tools don't show it that way up since they (the third party tool to preview) always may have some solid background on which they displays images and drawings. So it's sometimes also tool dependent if they can show and indicate you the transparency or not here.
