Restoring black and white photos on Affinity Photo iPad and coloring.   Using Affinity Photo on the desktop the process was simple,  1. select the photo, 2. make adjustments ,fix scratches, and so forth, 3. click on recolor,  4.  select the color, 4. then invert the recolor layer ( command i on Mac) switch to white, then start painting and continue this process until completion. I cannot find a reference regarding the process for the iPad once I click on recolor and select a color? How do I invert the recolor layer to start painting in new colors.

If you are using a colour layer mask you can invert the mask using the channel studio. I tend to use Gradient Mask layers, but it’s the same process. Invert the layer and paint with white to reveal. Here’s how I invert a gradient map layer but same method is used to invert any layer.

I made them by sampling various skin tones of different photos. There is a very good thread here on colourising old photos. Several techniques discussed.

Some ideas and the .afdesign file to play with. I just sketched with pen and added some Styles, but the only limit is your imagination. :)

I don’t sketch I use images free for commercial use. How can I clean my images up a bit using the tools in affinity designer on the iPad so it doesn’t look so rough? That’s what I’m struggling with.

how do I fix terrible looking images like this in affinity designer for iPad? I can’t figure it out. Thanks.

If all you want to do is tidy up then switch to pixel/raster mode and paint in the edges uses colour dropper to maintain colours. Sample from widest Selection for Brush colour.. Other than that I don¡t know what you are trying to do. 9_9

If you don’t wish to redraw using vectors and pen tool, then your options are limited. If you can see pixels then your image is a low resolution. Either get a better image or watch the video above on how to paint over the missing pixels. Select pixel brush and colour and then just paint over the pixels. It’s not difficult just takes a little time. There is no magic tool unfortunately.

Redrawing with the Pen Tool is much the best way to tackle something like this. If you try to flood fill a raster outline, you’re always going to end up with those antialiasing artefacts (the grey pixels) at the edges.

Best solution is to search for free VECTOR images and download in .eps or .ai format. These will open in Designer and will not have any pixel artifacts

Here is a sample to try. https://all-free-download.com/free-vector/download/yin-yang-symbol-black-round-sticker_311430.html

It’s very easy to construct your own yin-yang symbol. Start with two semicircles of the desired colours. Then, for each semicircle, add a half-height circle for the head and subtract a half-height circle for the tail. If you’re not making cats, finish off with a small circle (about a fifth of the height of the ones you added/subtracted) using the colour of the ‘opposite’ shape.

How do I know what pixels to change on this design and what to keep? Confusing.

All the ones that are neither purple or black. :)

Josie, you should take the time to learn how to use the pen tool in AD. You can import your image, add a vector layer and trace over the image  to create true vector shapes that are easily coloured. Raster images will always have jagged edges when zoomed in. They are less noticeable on high resolution images, but still there.

As I see it, your options are:

1. Learn how to use the app properly to create vector drawings. (It's easy once you get started)

2. Choose and download your images from vector art sources in either .eps or .ai formats. There are plenty of free image sites and the files can be opened in Designer and edited/recoloured.

3. If you are going to continue to use raster (pixel based) images, choose only high resolution images as the pixels will be less noticeable at normal viewing sizes.

Check out some of these videos. It is worth taking the time. https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/tutorials/designer/ipad/category/vector-tools/

How did you get it like that? Please explain? When using the pen tool how did you get it to nicely color like that with no problems?

And without ruining the design?

Who, me? And if you do mean me, did you examine the layers in the file that I attached? ears.gif
