Trying to create from scratch

I'm drawing my own creation and trying to solid fill different areas. I've created what I think is a solid out line, I just want to solid fill it. The program is not giving me an option to do this. The tutorial videos don't show you how to create something from scratch, only how to manipulate things existing.

Happy to offer suggestions. Could you post a screen recording showing what you are doing (tools used, Settings) and what result you get with fill. :) Solid outlines should fill without problems.

Your drawing is basically made up of open vector curves. When you try to fill an open vector curve it fills to the level of each end, eg, curve when filled looks like semi circle. I use a combination of completed (closed) shapes and then nest layer to hide /reveal desired outlines. See sample afdesign file attached attached below.
