Don't know if anyone else is experiencing this, but when placing pdfs into Publisher as linked files I keep finding issues with the text kerning being messed up.

I've attached an image showing some examples.

I'm having to convert all text to curves to get the pdf showing correctly.

On one pdf I placed it changed a font as it couldn't find it, though it was embedded in the pdf.

@benhughes89,

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums :)

To look into this please can you provide some PDFs and tell us where they were sourced, thank you

Hi PatrickConnor,

I've been using my own pdfs created either in Adobe InDesign or Affinity Designer. I was trying to swap a portfolio book originally designed using InDesign to Publisher, as I no longer have an Adobe subscription.

With the pdf issues I've had to export those to images (not ideal) to use in Publisher. I had a bit of a headache there as when the images were placed fairly small on the page, in the exported pdf they looked really pixelated even when trying to adjust pdf image settings to best quality... something I still need to have another look at!

Converting the pdfs to jpegs also threw up another problem as opening them in Photo or Designer always gives an editable document, which meant I couldn't export from Affinity as the pdf wouldn't show correctly... With Photoshop it opens as a flattened layer - avoiding any font issues - but I can't see any option for that in Photo.

Missing fonts seems to be the main issue. I'm sure with InDesign you could drop in pdfs without any problem even if you didn't have the fonts installed. With Publisher, it can't seem to decide if it should make the pdf editable or just link it like an image. So it half decides it needs to be editable, but as it can't find the font on the computer just messes the pdf up with a replacement!

Below are a few random pdfs I've downloaded to test. All three won't show properly in Publisher when placed or dropped in as I don't have all the fonts installed. No issues if opened in Acrobat.

Thanks for your help. :)

The Affinity products do not currently use fonts that are embedded in PDF files.  This is a known limitation.

That obviously shouldn't impact PDFs you are creating yourself on the same computer.
