qendl
When I duplicate a layer, the new layer appears in front of the old one. Is there a way to set layers created through duplication to appear behind the original layer? I tried Layer>Insertion>Behind but it didn't change anything. John Rostron
Since the the new, duplicated, layer will be identical to the original, why does it matter? If you want the original layer to be the one selected, then use @>|<'trick as above, or just use the mouse. firstdefence
Its a stack layers on top mentality, assuming anything you create will likely want to be layered above, most apps do this, else if you created something smaller than the top layer, the object would be hidden from view, so, after creating the smaller object it becomes a manual process to arrange layers as you see fit. John I do a lot of stuff using power duplicate on semi-transparent layers to make repeated outlines appearing to move back into or forward out of the image. Sometimes it would just be much easier if I could duplicate behind. John Rostron

Aammppaa
This thread is relevant here. I still stand by what I said two years ago - the current feature is useless, and the correctly implemented version would be useful! I do not agree that the current implementation is completely useless. For example, consider a simplified layer structure like below, where I might want to paste a copied object below layer 3. If there is already a selection that includes layer 3 but no layer below it, I can simply paste it into the document at that position by enabling 'insert behind' before doing the paste. Since it isn't all that unusual to have such a selection in place (for example to reposition layer 3 & perhaps a few above it on the canvas prior to pasting something else into the document), it can be quicker & easier to use this feature than by dragging it below layer 3 in the Layers panel after the paste. But that said, I do agree that the feature would be far more useful if its button was sticky, & no more confusing to anybody than the Snapping or View Mode button groups, both of which are sticky & I think always have been.
