If you want each curve to have a color you can adjust completely independently of all the others, then you will need at least that many objects in your document. It is not unusual to have several 100 curves in a vector based document. For example, on the Welcome screen, click "View Samples," download one of the larger ones like "Ad Agency," & look at its Layers panel. The "Skyline" rectangle alone is a parent layer containing a group of 58 objects, all but one of which are vector objects. That's why Layers (the capital "L" container layer type), Groups, clipping, & so on are available to organize the document into more easily managed parts.
