marching ants around object selected-unable to delete even when deleting object selected

Hi,

What is the fix for "marching ants" around an object? Even when the object is deleted the ants continue to march.

Select menu > Deselect, or use the keyboard shortcut shown in the menu item. The Escape key also usually works.

Deleting an object doesn't work because a 'marching ants' selection is not a part of any object or layer. It selects some part of the canvas, independently of what, if anything, is there. If it helps, you can think of it as 'floating' above the layers, as if it was a layer in its own right.
