I just purchased the programme from the Apple Store and when I click on any of the sample files that come with Affinity Photo (welcome screen), an X appears on the cloud icon. How do I access these files?

The red X appears while the download is in progress. It is provided as a way to cancel the download, which can take quite a while to complete. During the download, the white circle around the thumbnail of the sample should begin filling in with blue -- it is a progress bar of a sort.

Have never used the cloud.

In this context, "cloud" just means the sample files can be downloaded from Affinity servers somewhere. It doesn't have anything to do with cloud services you have to subscribe to to use.
